Notes before tonight's game (updated)

Orioles manager Buck Showalter told reporters today that Brian Roberts will start at second base Tuesday night in Chicago. Roberts is serving as the designated hitter tonight in the series finale against the Yankees. "Just a good place to start," Showalter said. Roberts is 5-for-12 in three games. "We saw it early on, the few games he played with us," Showalter said. "He had a really good spring, and I'm encouraged to hear (Triple-A Norfolk manager) Ron Johnson talk about the intensity that he was rehabbing at down there. He knows what's ahead of him, the need and the challenge of playing here brings, and he wants to bring what he can bring. We'll see where it takes us. "I think he's at a place where he just wants to come up and contribute and be a part of us getting where we're trying to go." Ryan Flaherty is starting at second base tonight and will get some starts later as the designated hitter. He's not going to disappear simply because Roberts has been activated. "We've got some people here, and I'm going to continue to make a situation where everybody can contribute," Showalter said. "We've got to make some (roster) decisions with Nolan (Reimold) and make a decision with (Wei-Yin) Chen, and there's some moving things there. We like Ryan. His versatility that we want to take advantage of. I don't consider them problems. I consider them good things that are going on. I'll continue to look for ways to keep everybody involved." Reimold hit his first home run today at Double-A Bowie in Game 1 of a doubleheader. The field is wet, and he's expected to sit out the nightcap. Update: Game 2 has been postponed. Reimold most likely will be activated from the disabled list Tuesday. He's 9-for-40 with a triple, a home run, five RBIs, four walks and 10 strikeouts with the Baysox, and 7-for-19 in his last four games. The Orioles are deciding whether Chen will make a second start on his rehab assignment or be activated later this week. "We're not there yet," Showalter said. "We'll probably come to that conclusion by the time the day's over, I hope." Showalter hasn't decided whether left-hander Zach Britton will make another start later this week. "We're going day to day," Showalter said. "Zach's presented himself as an option. As soon as we kind of put the schedule together, what we're going to do with Wei-Yin, I think all of that will fall into place a little bit better. "There's some benefits during the All-Star break, so I'm trying to put it together and keep all our options available that will make our bullpen as strong as it can be between now and the All-Star break. And, quite frankly, after the All-Star break for four or five days." Showalter wants to avoid using T.J. McFarland and Kevin Gausman tonight. He said left-handers Brian Matusz and Troy Patton are available to go multiple innings if needed. To further explain the Jair Jurrjens DFA today, or attempt to, the Orioles already were under the 40-man limit and couldn't designate him. They could, however, designate him off the 25-man. Jurrjens couldn't be optioned because he had only been up for one day. Based on his service time, it needed to be two days or more. Jurrjens is on optional waivers and will go down to Norfolk. He can wait three days to report. The Orioles did the same thing with reliever Alex Burnett earlier this season.
