Notes before tonight's Orioles-Red Sox game

The Orioles have won 14 of their last 19 games against the Red Sox, and 24 of their last 34. Infielder Jonathan Schoop has been activated from the minor league disabled list and rejoined Triple-A Norfolk for tonight's game at Rochester. He homered twice and drove in seven runs last night at short-season Single-A Aberdeen. To make room for Schoop, the Orioles released infielder Brandon Wood, who batted .215/.250/.309 with nine doubles, a triple, two home runs and 23 RBIs in 48 games after being purchased from the Royals on May 9. The Orioles most likely will stay with a three-man bench and eight-man bullpen until Monday's off day. They are inclined to keep the extra reliever against the Red Sox. Manager Buck Showalter said the club is keeping close tabs on Norfolk while deciding on another bench player. It may not mean anything, but he did mention Steve Pearce, LJ Hoes and Jason Pridie during that part of the conversation. Pearce started his rehab assignment today with the Gulf Coast League Orioles, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Showalter is planning to provide extra rest for some of his regulars, including Matt Wieters, Chris Davis and JJ. Hardy, by giving them a day off immediately before or after a scheduled off day in August. He believes that two days off are more beneficial for a player's legs. In his last 10 games against Boston, dating back to Sept. 28, 2012, Davis is 12-for-35 (.343) with seven homers, 13 RBIs and nine runs scored. Showalter said he doesn't have any immediate plans to start Henry Urrutia in the outfield, but he'd like to do it "in a perfect world." Perhaps it will happen while Showalter rests one of his regulars. Team orthopedist Dr. John Wilckens examined Wilson Betemit's knee today in Sarasota. Betemit is doing better, but there's still some swelling in the knee and the club has no idea when he'll be cleared to play. Manny Machado has five consecutive multi-hit games against the Red Sox since April 11. According to STATS, that's one shy of the club record behind Paul Blair (1969), Brooks Robinson (1971), Cal Ripken Jr. (1984), Melvin Mora (2004) and Jay Gibbons (2005).
