Notes on manager search, coaches, Davis, Trumbo, Bleier, more

LAS VEGAS - Orioles executive vice president and general manager Mike Elias didn't confirm today that he's chosen a manager. However, he talked about "a lot happening" over the past 24 hours and feeling "very good" about where he is in the process. He wants to get it done soon, but can't provide a specific timeframe.

Elias referred to yesterday's reports on the job being offered to Cubs bench coach Brandon Hyde as "premature and overzealous," and later as "inaccurate" based on how they were characterized.

Meanwhile, I'm told that Hyde has left the Winter Meetings.

Elias repeated that he'll yield to the manager's preferences on a coaching staff. He didn't rule out bringing back someone from this year's team, saying that a lot of good work was done.

Making front office hires is on the agenda, but could come later in the winter. He also needs to add to his analytics group and international scouting department.

Also, Elias confirmed that he met last night with agent Scott Boras pertaining to Chris Davis and looks forward to sitting down with the first baseman. He said it takes a collaborative effort to improve Davis' production.

"He's on this team for a while," Elias said.

Elias expects outfielder Mark Trumbo and reliever Richard Bleier to be available on opening day.

The Orioles will use the first pick in Thursday morning's Rule 5 draft on the best available talent, with a final decision on the player coming later tonight. Another player could be selected, as well, if someone on the list is available in the next round.

Elias said he's heard only "wonderful things" about Adam Jones and didn't completely rule out a return for the outfielder. He said that the club would monitor the free agent market and Jones is no different in that regard, but any signings will come later in the winter.

Elias also said he isn't looking to trade any of the minor leaguers unless they're part of a bigger deal.
