Notes on Orioles hitters, the Phillies and the farm

After a long wait to get to an eventual rainout last night, perhaps the raindrops will slow enough to allow the Orioles and Philadelphia Phillies to play this afternoon, in a game now scheduled to begin at 12:05 p.m.

With the Orioles having hit .312 as a team on this homestand, their team average is up to a season-high .236. During a 5-2 stand, the Orioles have hit 19 homers, 13 doubles and scored 58 runs. They beat Tampa Bay 17-1 on Sunday.

Some Orioles individual hitting notes:

* Jonathan Schoop is batting .290 (9-for-31) with two homers, nine RBIs and an OPS of .861 in seven games since coming off the DL. He is batting .381 (8-for-21) this year versus left-handed pitching.

* Chris Davis is 2-for-16 with eight strikeouts over his past four games. He is batting just .129 (4-for-31) with 16 strikeouts against left-handers. Davis is batting .300 (9-for-30) with runners in scoring position.

* Trey Mancini is 8-for-20 (.400) over his last five games with three homers and six RBIs. He is 4-for-8 with two homers his last two games. Mancini is a .419 batter (13-for-31) in the first inning.

* Adam Jones is batting .350 (14-for-40) during a season-high 10-game hitting streak. Jones is batting .361 (13-for-36) in nine games batting second.

* Chance Sisco is 4-for-13 over his last four games with two doubles, a homer, four runs and four RBIs. While Sisco is batting just .111 on the road, he is hitting .333 with an OPS of 1.081 in 15 home games.

* Manny Machado did not homer or drive in a run in his first seven games of the 2018 season. But over his past 34 games, he is batting .377 (49-for-130) with 13 homers and 38 RBIs. He has homered four times in his past five games and 10 times in his last 23.

The Phillies have won 23 of their first 39 games this season and with a win today, would post their best record through 40 games since the 2011 season, when they opened with a 25-15 record. A win would bring them to eight games over the .500 mark for the season, a watermark they have not accomplished since the end of the 2011 season. Since getting off to a 1-4 start to 2018, the Phillies have gone 22-12 over their last 34 games. Their .647 win percentage in that span is tops among all National League teams and ranks 3rd in the majors, trailing only the Yankees at .706 and the Red Sox at .657.

Outfielder Odubel Herrera has now reached base safely in a career-best 41 straight games, posting a .361/.426/.555 line over 176 plate appearances during the streak. Per Elias, he is tied for the fifth-longest on-base streak in Phillies history with Pete Rose (1982) and Don Hurst (1929). Herrera's 41-game on-base streak is the longest of any MLB player since 2016 when Freddie Freeman reached in 46 straight.

The Phillies have gone 8-14 against the National League East this season, but are a combined 15-2 against all other teams, going 7-0 versus the NL Central, 5-2 against the NL West and 3-0 versus the AL East. The Phillies swept three from the Rays by a combined 21-9 score in mid-April.

On the farm: Triple-A Norfolk allowed 10 runs in the second inning last night and then rallied but fell short in a 10-8 home loss to Indianapolis. Chris Lee gave up seven runs (four earned) over 1 2/3 to fall to 0-2 with an 11.25 ERA.

Garabez Rosa went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and third baseman Drew Dosch raised his average to .329, going 3-for-5 with two doubles. Dosch extended his hitting streak to eight and has nine doubles in 20 games on the season. In his Tides 2018 debut, outfielder Mike Yastrzemski went 3-for-5 with a single, double and triple.

Double-A Bowie lost to Harrisburg 8-2 in the completion of Monday's suspended game. The clubs then saw the second game become suspended by rain at 4-4 in the seventh inning. They'll attempt to resume that today at Bowie at 11:05 a.m. with a nine-inning game scheduled to follow that. In Tuesday's second game, right-hander Hunter Harvey allowed four hits and three runs over four innings and his ERA is 4.22. Ryan Mountcastle went 3-for-3 and is batting .429.

Lynchburg beat Single-A Frederick 13-12 as starter Ofelky Peralta allowed seven runs over three innings. Serving as the DH, Wilson Garcia, acquired May 1 from Philadelphia, went 3-for-3 with five RBIs and is hitting .370 for the Keys. Preston Palmeiro is batting .287 after going 3-for-4.

Single-A Delmarva lost 9-8 in 10 innings at Columbia. Left-hander Zac Lowther returned to the roster and went three innings allowing two hits and one run with three walks and two strikeouts. Ryan Ripken and Seamus Curran hit home runs. Ripken and Max Hogan had three hits.
