Notes on Perlozzo and Mahon (and Chase Johnson)

The Orioles haven't contacted former manager Sam Perlozzo about their third base coaching job. Perlozzo, who was let go as Phillies first base coach, obviously would be interested if the Orioles reached out to him. So far, it hasn't happened. Perlozzo seemed like a perfect fit for the Nationals after third base coach Bo Porter was hired as Astros manager, but the club needed an outfield instructor. The Orioles, meanwhile, need an infield instructor to replace DeMarlo Hale. The Frontier League's Gateway Grizzlies announced today that the Orioles purchased the contract of left-handed reliever Logan Mahon, a 22nd-round pick of the Rockies in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of Southeast Missouri State. Mahon, 24, went 2-1 with a 2.52 ERA in 33 games, with 21 walks and 25 strikeouts in 35 2/3 innings. Mahon didn't last long in Colorado's system, appearing in five games with Casper of the rookie-level Pioneer League in 2011. He allowed three runs and six hits in six innings, with four walks and six strikeouts. The Orioles have been known to dip into the independent leagues under executive vice president Dan Duquette. They signed outfielder Lew Ford in May after his third stint with the Atlantic League's Long Island Ducks, and they purchased left-hander Rich Rundles contract from the Atlantic League's Lancaster Barnstormers in July. They re-signed Ford to a minor league contract with a spring training invite after he refused an outright assignment to Triple-A Norfolk. Rundles is a minor league free agent. Also, the Orioles signed right-hander Chase Johnson, 24, from the Amarillo Sox, according to a tweet tonight from the independent American Association. Johnson, a 21st-round pick of the Phillies in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft out of South Mountain Community College, was 5-5 with a 3.66 ERA in 44 relief appearances for Amarillo, with 22 walks and 46 strikeouts in 46 2/3 innings. He was 4-6 with a 4.31 ERA in 38 appearances with low Single-A Lakewood in 2011.
