Notes on roster move, McFarland, Reimold, Davis, All-Star voting and more

Orioles manager Buck Showalter said the club will make a roster move before tonight's game against the Rangers at Camden Yards. Showalter said the move will be "in the pitching department." The Orioles need another reliever and could option a starting pitcher. Left-hander T.J. McFarland is "most likely" going to start Tuesday night, according to Showalter, unless he's needed tonight in relief. The Orioles intend to designate outfielder Nolan Reimold for assignment today, according to sources. The Orioles haven't made an announcement, but it must happen today because Reimold's rehab assignment at Double-A Bowie ended over the weekend. Asked whether Chris Davis would play third base during all five games of Manny Machado's suspension, Showalter replied, "Let's take it day to day." Davis' last start at third base occurred on Sept. 28, 2011. Having Davis at third tonight allows Showalter to put Steve Pearce and Delmon Young in the lineup against Rangers left-hander Joe Saunders. Machado can work out with the team during batting practice, but he can't be in the dugout or clubhouse once the game starts. He can watch the game in a suite or private box. Bud Norris said his groin is feeling much better and he still intends to throw a bullpen session Tuesday or Wednesday. He's eligible to come off the disabled list on July 7. Nelson Cruz continues to lead the designated hitters in All-Star voting, and Matt Wieters remains in first place among catchers, though Oakland's Derek Norris is gaining ground. Wieters has received 2,103,385 votes to remain ahead of Norris, who had totaled 1,924,049. Wieters will miss the remainder of the 2014 season after undergoing ligament-reconstructive surgery in his right elbow. Cruz has received 2,944,267 votes to lead Boston's David Ortiz (1,948,211). Davis is third among first basemen and J.J. Hardy is third among shortstops. Machado is fourth among third basemen. Adam Jones is fifth among outfielders and Nick Markakis is eighth. Fans may continue to cast their ballots online at MLB.com, the 30 team web sites and their mobile devices until Thursday at 11:59 p.m. Former Orioles general manager Frank Cashen passed away today at Memorial Hospital in Easton, Md. He was 88. Cashen was an executive with the Orioles when they reached the World Series in 1966, 1969, 1970 and 1971, winning two titles.
