Notes on Matt Wieters, Dylan Bundy and Mike Yastrzemski

Another Halloween is upon us and I'm still breaking out the same costume - sportswriter sitting on his front step handing out candy.

If something works, I stick with it.

I don't pass out candy corn, toothbrushes or pennies. I'm not that guy. I grab bags of fun-size candy bars from the shelves of my local grocery store and ponder exactly what makes them fun. Two bites, max, and they're gone.

The Orioles held another organizational meeting yesterday and the usual topics were addressed again, including major league and minor league free agents of interest, and potential non-tenders of interest from outside the organization.

Matt Wieters remains a hot topic. Do the Orioles make him a qualifying offer?

Yes, it's still being discussed and debated.

From what I can glean, the Orioles mostly are in agreement that Wieters should receive the offer as a win/win proposition. If he accepts it, they have him for the 2016 season at a cost of $15.8 million. If he declines it and signs with another team, they receive the compensation pick and move on without him.

Not everyone was on board with making him the offer, but it seems more likely now that it's going to happen. As always, stay tuned.

The Orioles didn't extend a qualifying offer to Nick Markakis and didn't get a draft pick after he signed a four-year deal with the Braves. They really don't want to see Wieters walk and receive nothing in return.

* Dylan Bundy is scheduled to start Monday for the Peoria Javelinas in the Arizona Fall League. He also will take the mound on Friday and again the following Monday, assuming that his right shoulder responds favorably to the workload.

Bundy is on the 60-day disabled list, but he must be placed on the 40-man roster before starting for Peoria. The roster currently is full, with pitcher Vance Worley the most recent addition while reliever Jorge Rondon was designated for assignment and claimed off waivers by the Pirates.

Infielder Andy Wilkins, claimed off waivers from the Dodgers on Sept. 6, may be the most vulnerable. However, there are a few others who could be removed. I wouldn't get too attached to outfielder Junior Lake.

Another reminder that six spots will open if the Orioles don't re-sign any of their pending free agents before they hit the market following the World Series.

* Mike Yastrzemski singled yesterday for Peoria, only his fourth hit in 29 at-bats. He has a double, home run, five RBIs, five walks and seven strikeouts in nine games.

Yastrzemski was 2-for-5 with a double, home run, three RBIs and two walks in his first two games before cooling off.
