Notes on roster moves, Miley, injuries and more

The Orioles made space on the 40-man roster for infielder Paul Janish by recalling left-hander Chris Lee from Double-A Bowie and placing him on the 60-day disabled list with a strained shoulder.

Lee, 24, has been on the minor league disabled list with a strained lat muscle. A player must be placed on the major league roster before he can be transferred to the 60-day DL.

One of the Orioles' top pitching prospects, Lee registered a 2.98 ERA in 51 1/3 innings this season at Bowie. He appeared in only eight games, including seven starts, due to injury.

The Orioles purchased Janish's contract from Triple-A Norfolk and recalled pitcher Mike Wright, a surprise addition to the major league staff. Wright has been working out in Sarasota.

Wright provides another long reliever in the bullpen for manager Buck Showalter.

Showalter said he's leaning toward starting left-hander Wade Miley on Sunday, with a few factors at work.

Miley is 4-2 with a 2.81 ERA in eight career starts against the Rays. By starting him on Sunday, Showalter can push back Dylan Bundy, Kevin Gausman and Chris Tillman and provide extra rest.

Showalter also could keep Ubaldo Jimenez and Tillman on regular rest and start them against the Red Sox after Bundy and Gausman. That would again require pushing back Yovani Gallardo, who starts tonight.

Steve Pearce doesn't expect to start doing baseball activities until seven days have passed after his platelet-rich plasma injection in his right forearm.

Darren O'Day remains scheduled to throw a second simulated game on Friday and could be activated Sunday or Monday.

Outfielder Joey Rickard will attempt to play in simulated games Friday and Saturday in Sarasota. He won't come off the disabled list before Monday and that date may be too ambitious. He's still dealing with some soreness in his right thumb.

Minor league infield coordinator Dave Anderson has joined the Orioles as an extra coach.
