O's game blog: Is today the day to end the streak?

SEATTLE - During a 10-game losing streak, the Orioles have lost four times by two runs or one, the latest last night's 10-9 loss at Seattle. The O's 10-game streak matches the longest in the majors this year.

Kansas City lost 10 in a row from March 31-April 11, and Detroit lost 10 in a row from May 13-23. The 1958 Orioles lost 11 straight between July 27 and Aug. 8, and the club has had losing streaks of 12 or more just six times in its history.

At 21-55, the Orioles are 12-27 on the road. Overall, they have lost 14 of 16, 18 of 22 and 33 of the last 41 games. Since starting this year going 4-1, the Orioles are 17-54.

Seattle is 34-46 overall, 16-24 at home and 9-11 in June. Since posting a record of 22-23 on May 14, the Mariners are 12-23. They now have their first three-game win streak since April 18-20.

They have scored 10 runs or more 10 times in 2019. That is tied for fifth-most in the major leagues. The Astros and Rangers are tied for lead in this category, scoring 10 or more in 12 games each.

Seattle hit three home runs Friday to bring its total to 141 on the season, second-most in the majors, trailing only Minnesota (143). The 141 home runs before the All-Star break ranks second-most in franchise history, trailing only the 1999 club, which had 151.

Seattle center fielder Mallex Smith is the fourth player in Mariners history to reach base safely via a hit or walk five times, score three or more runs, and steal two or more bases in a single game. He joins Ichiro Suzuki (April 19, 2011 vs. Detroit), Willie Bloomquist (Sept. 27, 2002 vs. Los Angeles Angels) and Mark McLemore (May 12, 2001 vs. Toronto).

The Orioles' 14 hits last night matched their total of the previous three games. They have gone three games without a homer. They had just one extra-base hit in the first four games of this road trip but got four doubles Friday. O's pitching has allowed 42 runs and 12 homers in going 0-5 at Oakland and Seattle.

Right-hander Andrew Cashner (6-3, 4.48 ERA) will make his 15th start for the Orioles. He pitched on eight days' rest Monday at Oakland with his start pushed back due a blister on his right middle finger. He threw well that night, recording his team-leading seventh quality start. Over six innings he allowed four hits and three runs (one earned) on 97 pitches.

Over his past two games, Cashner has allowed two earned runs and eight hits over 12 innings, with two walks and five strikeouts. In nine road games he is 3-3 with a 4.60 ERA.

The Mariners are expected to start lefty Tommy Milone (1-1, 3.03 ERA). Milone has followed an opener and pitched out of the bullpen in his last three games. In those outings he has pitched 17 2/3 innings, yielding 10 hits and five runs and recorded one walk to 13 strikeouts. In six career games (five starts) against Baltimore, he is 2-1 with a 2.23 ERA with six walks and 21 strikeouts over 32 1/3.
