O's game blog: It's Miley against Pineda in series finale

After posting wins of 8-0 and 2-0 the last two nights, today the Orioles look for a three-game sweep of the New York Yankees at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

The Yankees have just six hits, all singles, in this series, going 6-for-57 (.105) at bat. The Orioles have recorded three straight shutouts of the Yankees for the first time ever. They have allowed 14 hits in those games.

O's starters Dylan Bundy and Kevin Gausman have thrown 11 2/3 scoreless innings at the Yankees this weekend. Over the last six games, O's starting pitchers have an ERA of 2.11. Over the last 13 games, they have picked up nine quality starts with an ERA of 3.54.

Meanwhile, the Orioles are 8-7 this season versus the Yankees and are 6-2 at home. They have won all three home series against New York. The Orioles are 13-4 the last two years at home against the Yankees. Since 2013, they are 26-10 at OPACY against the Yankees.

After going through a two-start stretch where he allowed 13 runs in six innings, Miley is 1-1 with a 3.75 ERA his past two starts. In those games against the Nationals and Blue Jays, he pitched 12 innings, allowing 12 hits and five runs with three walks and 15 strikeouts.

In six total starts with the Orioles, Miley is 1-3 with a 7.14 ERA, allowing 40 hits in 29 innings with eight walks and 28 strikeouts. In three home starts, Miley is 0-2 with an ERA of 8.56. He has not faced the Yankees this year, either with the Mariners or Orioles. In five career starts against New York, he is 0-2 with a 5.52 ERA.

The 27-year-old Pineda has given up 10 runs and 14 hits over 11 1/3 in his past two starts. In five August starts, Pineda went 1-1 with a 5.08 ERA and .294 average against. He has struggled early in his outings. His first-inning ERA is 7.62, allowing a batting average of .369 and seven of his 22 homers in the opening inning. His ERA is 5.88 in the second inning of his starts.

Pineda is a strikeout pitcher. On the year over 147 2/3 innings, he has walked 40 and fanned 168. The Yankees are 12-14 in his 26 starts.

Pineda pitched once this season versus the Orioles. On July 20 at New York, he threw six scoreless innings on five hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. In 10 career games against Baltimore, he is 4-2 with a 3.68 ERA and 70 strikeouts in 58 2/3 innings. Left-handed batters hit .271 off him and right-handers bat .269.
