O's game blog: O's trying to avoid a sweep in the Bronx (O's lose 14-3)

The Orioles are looking to avoid a series sweep and also snap an eight-game road losing streak this afternoon in the series finale in the Bronx. The Yankees (36-23) host the Orioles (31-29) after winning by 8-2 Friday and 16-3 last night.

While the Baltimore offense has produced just five runs and nine hits this weekend, O's pitching has given up 24 runs on 29 hits, including eight homers. The team ERA began this series at 4.39 and is now at 4.61.

Believe it or not, with a win today, the Orioles would tie the season series against New York. They trail 6-5 through the first 11 games, going 4-2 at home, but are 1-4 on the road.

Right-hander Kevin Gausman (3-4, 5.86 ERA) will make his 14th start and try to slow a New York offense that has scored 41 runs its past four games.

In his last start on Tuesday, Gausman gave up four runs and eight hits over 6 2/3 innings versus Pittsburgh on 113 pitches. He has recorded four quality starts for the season with three in his last six games. The Orioles are 7-6 in his starts.

Gausman has a WHIP of 1.788 and has allowed 12.3 hits per nine innings with 3.8 walks per nine and 6.4 strikeouts per nine. In six road starts, he is 1-3 with a 7.71 ERA.

In three 2017 starts against New York, he is 1-0 with a 6.19 ERA and 2.125 WHIP. In 20 career games (14 starts) against the Yankees, he is 7-3 with a 2.63 ERA and 1.213 WHIP.

Right-hander Chad Green will start for New York. He had made seven outings, all in relief, and is 0-0 with a 1.62 ERA. Over 16 2/3 innings, he has allowed just six hits and three runs with four walks, 20 strikeouts and a .115 batting average against.

Orioles starting pitchers have thrown a total of 14 innings, allowing 21 runs the last four games. The rotation ERA for the year is up to 5.00, which now ranks last in the American League.

Swept away in the Bronx: Gausman allowed five runs in a span of 12 pitches in the last of the first today. It didn't get much better after that as New York routed the Orioles 14-3 to complete a three-game sweep. New York outscored the Orioles 38-8 in this series.

The Orioles fall to 31-30 and have lost nine in a row and 13 of their last 14 on the road. They are 0-4 on this trip with four games to go in Chicago.

The Orioles have lost four in a row overall and been outscored by 44-9 since their back-to-back comeback wins over Pittsburgh on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Gausman and Chris Tillman combined to allow 11 runs in the first inning the past two games. They combined to allow 15 hits and 16 runs in 4 2/3 innings. O's starters have an ERA of 14.54 the past five games.

New York's Aaron Judge went 4-for-4 with two homers and three RBIs. His solo homer in the sixth went 495 feet and was the longest homer hit this year. Judge has eight homers and 16 RBIs on the season against the Orioles.

Tomorrow night in Chicago, lefty Wade Miley (2-3, 3.27 ERA) faces White Sox right-hander Mike Pelfrey (2-5, 3.80 ERA).
