O's game blog: Orioles look for a series win in the Bronx

During a season that saw them lose 115 games, the Orioles actually had a winning record last year at Yankee Stadium. They went 5-4 and are 1-1 in the Bronx in the season-opening series that wraps up today.

The Yankees won 7-2 on opening day but the Orioles beat New York 5-3 on Saturday afternoon. Jesús Sucre had three hits and three RBIs, Jimmy Yacabonis got the win and Mike Wright his first career save.

Today, Orioles right-hander Dylan Bundy (8-16, 5.45 ERA in 2018) pitches against New York lefty J.A. Happ (17-6, 3.65 ERA in 2018).

Bundy made 31 starts last year and tied for the major league lead in losses and led the majors by allowing 41 homers. He yielded 2.1 homers per every nine innings pitched. Bundy went 0-2 with an ERA of 9.00 in two starts last season versus the Yankees. In nine career games (seven starts), he is 2-5 with a 6.18 ERA against New York.

In 15 starts within the American League East in 2018, he went 2-10 with a 6.26 ERA and the Orioles were 2-13 in those games. But here is a stat that might bode well for him today: Bundy made 10 day game starts last season, going 6-1 with a 2.28 ERA. His daytime ERA was the sixth-lowest in the majors (minimum 60 innings).

Happ made 31 starts in 2018 between Toronto and New York. In 11 starts with the Yankees, he was 7-0 with a 2.69 ERA and 1.052 WHIP. The Yankees went 9-2 in those games.

Happ was real good against Baltimore last year, going 3-0 with a 1.55 ERA in five starts. In 29 innings, he walked eight, fanned 37 and had a WHIP of 1.00. In 20 career games (19 starts), he is 7-6 with a 2.97 ERA and 1.183 WHIP, allowing a .242 average against and OPS of .719.

Youth is served: According to a graphic on yesterday's MASN telecast from New York, the 2019 Orioles are the youngest team in Major League Baseball with an average age of 27 years, 150 days. The Orioles have the fifth-youngest pitching staff (27 years, 355 days) and third-youngest group of position players (26 years, 325 days). The Orioles roster has the combined second-fewest career games played at 5,559. Only Tampa Bay has fewer at 4,568.
