O's game blog: Orioles looking for second win on road trip

After becoming the third club in team history to lose 100 or more games last night, the Orioles would become the second Baltimore club to have lost 101 or more if they get beat tonight.

The Orioles (41-100) play at Tampa Bay (76-64) in the second of a three-game series and eighth game of a nine-game road trip, during which the Orioles are 1-6 so far.

O's starter Dylan Bundy gave up six runs last night in a 14-2 loss to the Rays. Bundy has pitched to a 10.67 ERA over his last six starts. In his past 11 starts, he is 1-7 with an 8.83 ERA and he's yielded 19 homers in 54 innings in that span.

The O's starters are struggling again. Over their last 11 games they have a 5.59 ERA and have just two quality starts.

The Orioles are 17-56 in road games, with losses in 10 of their last 11 and 27 of 32 away from Oriole Park.

The Rays, who are 9-8 versus the Orioles and 5-2 at Tropicana Field versus Baltimore, are 22-11 since Aug. 1. In their last 25 games, Rays pitching has allowed three runs or fewer 18 times.

On the mound tonight for the Orioles is right-hander David Hess (3-9, 5.27 ERA), who is making his 16th start. Hess went into his previous game, last Sunday at Kansas City, as a pitcher on a roll. He had allowed just one run in 13 innings his last two games and had a 2.19 ERA in his previous four.

But he struggled at Kauffman Stadium. Over four innings he gave up nine hits and five runs (four earned), throwing 76 pitches. In 11 road games (10 starts) Hess is 1-6 with a 5.50 ERA.

The Rays will use an "opener" today with right-hander Diego Castillo (3-2, 3.48 ERA) getting the start. He has pitched in 35 games on the year, making four starts. In those four games he has a 4.26 ERA over 6 1/3 innings.

For the year, Castillo has thrown 44 innings, allowing 29 hits and just four home runs. He's logged 16 walks, 47 strikeouts and a .184 batting average against. Lefties hit just .194 against him and right-handers bat .177.

Left-hander Ryan Yarbrough (13-5, 3.68) is expected to follow Castillo to the mound and pitch starter innings. Yarbrough has an 0.84 ERA over his past five games, allowing two runs in 21 1/3 innings.
