O's game blog: Orioles looking to bounce back from series-opening loss

TORONTO - After blowing a lead in the ninth and losing in the 10th last night, the Orioles return to Rogers Centre tonight looking to bounce back with a win against the Toronto Blue Jays. It's the second game of a four-game series.

The Orioles (19-42) will have 100 games remaining after this one. Last night they fell short in a bid for a season-high three-game road winning streak. They have lost eight of 10, 10 of 14 and 14 of the last 20 games.

Toronto began this series having lost seven of eight overall and 10 of 11 at home. But the Blue Jays are now 6-1 in extra innings, one more win than last year when they had a record of 5-14 in extras. Their win snapped a seven-game losing streak against American League East opponents. Since beginning the season 17-12, Toronto is 10-23.

Andrew Cashner (2-7, 5.02 ERA) will make his 13th start for the Orioles. He has allowed three earned runs or less five times in his past six starts, but is just 1-3 with a 5.29 ERA in that span. Cashner has five quality starts, but just two over his last eight games.

He has allowed a .281 batting average against lefty batters, .311 versus right-handers and .263 when pitching with runners in scoring position. In five road starts, he is 2-2 with a 4.73 ERA.

Left-hander J.A. Happ (7-3, 4.08 ERA) gets the start for Toronto. Over his past four starts, he is 3-0 with an ERA of 2.81. Happ has six quality starts and the team is 8-4 in his 12 starts in 2018.

On April 9 in Baltimore, Happ beat the Orioles, allowing one run and five hits over six innings. Last season, he went 0-3 with an ERA of 3.06 in three starts against Baltimore. In 16 career games (15 starts), he is 5-6 with a 3.33 ERA and 94 strikeouts over 92 innings.

On the farm: The Orioles are hopeful that Triple-A Norfolk outfielder DJ Stewart (hamstring), out since May 26, will return this Monday. Double-A outfielder Austin Hays (right ankle), out since May 24, is set to return around June 16-17.

Since being promoted from Double-A Bowie on May 20, right-handed reliever Ryan Meisinger has gone 1-0 with a 0.84 ERA and 14 strikeouts in seven outings. Meisinger has not allowed a run over his last six appearances and has limited International League batters to a .158 average (6-for-38).

Outfielder Anthony Santander has hit safely in 15 of first 18 games with the Baysox. He's batting .296/.324/.451 with five doubles, two homers and 12 RBIs. Santander is batting .375 with runners in scoring position.

Hunter Harvey dealing with shoulder issue: Double-A Bowie right-hander Hunter Harvey was scratched was his scheduled start tonight because he is dealing with "posterior shoulder instability," a club official confirmed tonight.

In his last Baysox start, Harvey gave up six runs and five hits over two innings. That raised his ERA from 4.15 to 5.57 after nine starts. Rated as the Orioles No. 4 prospect by Baseball America, Harvey had Tommy John surgery in July of 2016. It is not yet known the full extent of this injury or how long he will be out.
