O's game blog: Second game of the series in the Bronx

So close to having a 3-1 road trip. With losses the last two games by 5-4 at Toronto and 4-3 in 11 innings at New York, the Orioles indeed could be looking at a 3-1 road trip, instead of being 1-3 heading into this afternoon's game at Yankee Stadium.

But the Orioles (41-92), who have played three straight games decided by two runs or fewer, have lost six of seven and 25 of their past 28 games heading into the second of this three-game series in the Bronx.

The Orioles are 1-12 in their last 13 road games and 22-48 in 70 road games for the season. They are 8-21 on the road against American League East clubs. The Birds are 5-9 versus the Yankees this season and 2-5 in the Bronx, and they are 2-15 in their last 17 games at Yankee Stadium. They are now 3-5 in extra-inning games.

The O's Trey Mancini went 2-for-4 with his 21st homer on Friday. He reached base three times and recorded his 34th multi-hit game. His homer off Nestor Cortes Jr., with two outs in the sixth, was his first since Aug. 14 at Boston. Mancini has hit safely in 10 of his last 12 games, batting .320 (16-for-50) with seven runs, three doubles and four RBIs.

Infielder Jorge Mateo went 1-for-4 with a home run. He hit a game-tying, solo shot off Jonathan Loaisiga with one out in the seventh, his third homer and second with Baltimore. He has hit safely in 19 of 23 games since joining the Orioles, batting .321 (26-for-81) with eight runs, seven doubles, two homers and six RBIs. And 10 of his 26 hits with the Orioles have gone for extra bases.

Ryan Mountcastle hit a go-ahead RBI single with one out in the 10th inning, and it marked his first career hit that gave his team the lead in extra innings. It was also his first career hit that gave his team the lead after the seventh inning. Mountcastle has hit safely in five straight games, batting .474 (9-for-19) with two homers and five RBIs.

Mountcastle swings at 42.2 percent of first pitches seen, the sixth-highest percentage in the American League. But he is batting .474/.466/.947 (27-for-57) with seven home runs when hitting the first pitch, and his seven homers are tied for the fifth-most in the AL. Mountcastle's 11 home runs and 27 RBIs since the All-Star break lead the O's, and he's hitting .302/.352/.627 (38-for-126) in the second half.

Outfielder Austin Hays doubled in the eighth inning to extend his hitting streak to 10 games since Aug. 24, matching his career high. He's batting .382/.417/.647 (13-for-34) with six extra-base hits, seven runs scored and six RBIs during his streak. He has hit safely in 25 of his last 30 games.

New York (78-56) recorded its ninth walk-off win of the season Friday, its most since the Yankees had nine in 2014. The last time they recorded more was in 2009, when they had 15. New York has won 15 of its last 19 games, 25 of 33 and 27 of the last 36. The Yankees are 32-12 (.727) in their last 44 games since July 17, the best record in the majors in that span.

New York is 17-2 in its last 19 home games and has won a season-high eight straight games at home, their longest home winning streak since a 12-game winning streak in 2020. The Yankees have now played 76 games this season determined by one or two runs and are tied with the New York Mets for the most such games in the big leagues. They are 49-27 (.645) in those games, best mark in the majors.

Right-hander Chris Ellis (1-0, 3.09 ERA) gets the start for the Orioles. The team is 1-1 in his previous two starts. He allowed three runs in three innings versus the Angels and gave up two hits and one run in 4 2/3 innings his last time out, against Toronto. Blue Jays batters were 2-for-16 against him Monday night, when he threw 69 pitches.

Lefty Jordan Montgomery (5-5, 3.52 ERA) will make his 25th start for the Yankees. They are 15-9 in his outings, including a 4-1 mark in the last five starts. He's allowed one earned run or none in five of the last six, going 2-0 with a 1.44 ERA in that span. In 31 1/3 innings he's walked 11 and fanned 27, yielding a batting average against of .217 and OPS of .564 in that stretch.
