O's game blog: Tillman on mound, Machado at third as O's go for sweep

Chris Tillman gets the start in the second game of this doubleheader as the Orioles go for the sweep. The right-hander is 3-1 with a 3.38 ERA in five starts. He has not pitched since last Wednesday at Toronto when he gave up seven runs and nine hits over 5 2/3 innings, but still got the win. That start raised his ERA from 1.71 to 3.38. MachadoOvationWide.jpgLeft-handed batters are hitting .276 off Tillman, who yields an average of .192 to right-handed batters and .231 when pitching with runners in scoring position. The Orioles are 4-1 when Tillman starts in 2014 and 35-18 (.660) since 2012. Pittsburgh's starter is 25-year-old right-hander Brandon Cumpton. He is making his second start after being recalled from the minors to pitch last Thursday. He took a tough loss against Cincinnati when he gave up just four hits and two runs over seven innings. Cumpton began the season at Triple-A, going 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA. Over 19 innings, he walked three and fanned 11. Manny Machado will start at third base and bat second in this game. He's already gotten several ovations - when he ran out to warm up, when his name was announced in the stating lineup and when he took the field. It's a special night for the kid after a long comeback to get to this point. Eventful first inning: Machado returned to a standing ovation (as pictured above) and Tillman threw 49 pitches in the top of the first. Yep, an eventful inning. Machado grounded out to short on an 0-2 pitch in his first big league at-bat since Sept. 23. Tillman, meanwhile, threw a staggering total of pitches for a single inning as he walked three and had one at-bat that led to an out go 13 pitches in the first. Buck Showalter had to be squirming a bit in the dugout watching his ace labor and run up that pitch count total in the first. Tillman out in the fifth: Tillman left tonight's start after giving up an RBI triple in the fifth to Gaby Sanchez that put Pittsburgh ahead 3-0. Since throwing 122 pitches in five innings on April 18 at Boston, Tillman has made two starts. Over 10 1/3 innings, he has given up 15 hits and 10 runs to Toronto and Pittsburgh.
