O's game blog: Tyler Wilson on the mound in Seattle series finale

The Orioles go for another series win today as they host Seattle to wrap up a seven-game homestand and three-game series. The Mariners won 10-0 Tuesday night, with the Orioles winning 5-2 last night.

The Orioles are 8-3-1 in their 12 series on the year and today's game will decide this series. The Orioles are 17-7 at home and 4-2 on this homestand. They head west after this game for a weekend series against the Los Angeles Angels.

Last season on May 20, right-hander Tyler Wilson made his major league debut against the Seattle Mariners. Today, one day shy of a year later, Wilson faces the Mariners again, this time as a starter.

Wilson pitched a scoreless ninth inning last May in his debut. He got out of a two-on, one-out jam when he got Robinson Cano to ground into a double play. That night, he became the 994th player to play for the Orioles since the club moved to Baltimore in 1954. According to Baseball-Reference.com, he became the 22nd player drafted out of the University of Virginia to make his major league debut.

Wilson went 2-2 with a 3.50 ERA in nine games last year. This season, he is 2-1 with a 2.93 ERA in seven games and four starts. He has recorded back-to-back quality starts, going 1-1 with a 2.97 ERA against the Yankees and Twins. In his four starts, he is 2-1 with a 3.57 ERA.

Left-handed batters are hitting .258 off Wilson and right-handed batters are hitting .185. He yields an average of .286 when pitching with runners in scoring position.

His mound opponent today is right-hander Nathan Karns (3-1, 3.51 ERA), who will be making his eighth 2016 start. Karns pitched to an ERA of 5.28 over his first three starts, but has now put together a run of four consecutive quality starts. In that span, he is 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA.

Over 41 innings, Karns has allowed 18 walks with 43 strikeouts, five homers and a .239 average against. In four road starts, Karns is 2-0 with a 3.57 ERA.

The Orioles have scored 36 runs their last seven games and 57 over their past 10. They hit back-to-back homers last night for the seventh time this year. They have hit 20 homers over their last nine games.
