O's overcome miscues and Guthrie's early exit to beat Toronto

A day that featured another Orioles' base-running mistake and a key error in the last of the sixth inning, along with Jeremy Guthrie leaving his start with an injury, still ended in a win for the Orioles today at Toronto. The Orioles scored twice in the top of the ninth to snap a 2-2 tie and beat the Blue Jays 4-3 this afternoon. That ended their 16-game Toronto losing streak. It's the longest road losing streak versus one club in team history. Today marks the first O's win at Rogers Centre since Aug. 7, 2009. Adam Lind led off the last of the ninth with a solo homer to pull Toronto within one, but Kevin Gregg got the next three hitters out to finish off the win. Vladimir Guerrero and Luke Scott led off the ninth with singles. Derrek Lee's fielder's choice grounder scored the go-ahead run, and Ryan Adams, who made that costly error earlier, delivered an RBI single for his first big league RBI. Guthrie gave up just one hit in five shutout innings and 64 pitches but was forced to leave the game with a back strain. The game was scoreless until the Orioles took a 2-0 lead in the sixth. J.J. Hardy led off the inning with a solo homer to left and later Guerrero made it 2-0 on an RBI double. The double was the 2,500th hit of Vlad's career. Hardy now has seven homers, one more than last year. He had six homers in 340 at bats, and today hit number seven in his 142nd at bat of 2011. Hardy went 2-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to nine games. With Guthrie out of the game, Toronto scored twice in the last of the sixth off Jim Johnson with the help of a costly error. With a man on and none out, Yunel Escobar's grounder up the middle was booted by Adams at second base. The Orioles would have at least gotten the lead runner out on the play and maybe turned two. One out later - a sac bunt - Jose Bautista followed with a two-run single to produce a 2-2 tie. The Orioles ended their four-game losing steak, improving to 31-35 overall and 11-17 on the road. It was just the second road win in ten games for the Birds. The Orioles begin a three-game series in Washington Friday night against the Nationals.
