Considering they have a first-round pick, two second-round picks, a third-round pick and a competitive balance pick, the Orioles already have a pretty good haul of draft picks for next June's First-Year Player Draft.
If they lose Wei-Yin Chen or Chris Davis through free agency, they would get a compensatory pick for each player lost.
Baseball America released today the current order for the 2016 draft through 106 picks. The Orioles have the 14th, 52nd, 69th, 75th and 91st picks in that group. They were selecting 15th in the opening round, but Arizona lost its No. 13 pick for signing pitcher Zach Grienke and the Orioles moved up one spot. Baseball America estimates the Orioles' bonus pool for the draft would be just over $6.7 million.
During a video interview today with MASNsports.com, I asked Orioles scouting director Gary Rajsich about having five of the first 91 draft picks as of today.
"Well, we're going to approach it like we always do," Rajsich said. "We're going to scout the best prospects and get multiple looks and have all the information we can get. And we'll stand by what we do all the time, which is to try and take the next best player. But it is going to be a big spring and we'll have to widen our scope on the amount of players that we see."
I asked Rajsich about outfielder DJ Stewart out of Florida State, the club's top draft pick last summer. Selected 25th overall by the Orioles, he hit just .218 in 62 games with short-season Single-A Aberdeen. He made some swing adjustments during instructional league, to come up a bit out of his pronounced low batting crouch.
"I think DJ got a good inauguration to pro ball," Rajsich said. "He learned how to play every day. He learned what it's like to face pitchers with velocity every day. He'll be fine. I'm not worried about that one.
"I think he is going to be a good productive major league player that our fans in Baltimore are going to like. Because he fits the profile of our club - a hard working, blue-collar player that is going to produce results."
Today, O's left-handed pitching prospect Tanner Scott was named to the Top Prospects team for this season by the Arizona Fall League. The 21-year-old Scott was drafted in Round 6 in 2014 out of a Texas junior college.
For Peoria of the AFL, he went 0-1 with an ERA of 2.00 in eight games. Over nine innings, he walked five and fanned 10. Between Aberdeen and Single-A Delmarva this year, he went 4-3 with a 3.83 ERA and fanned 60 in 42 1/3 innings. Scott's fastball has touched 100 mph.
"I think he kind of flew under the radar last year," Rajsich said of Scott. "But we thought he had a great arm. He needed help with his delivery and throwing strikes - he needed some development. But now that he's getting to that point where he is throwing the ball over the plate more often, we've seen that triple-digit velocity. And for a left-hander, there are only a handful of guys doing that. That is why he is getting all the attention he is."
