O's tie it in eighth, but lose in ninth to Yankees for four-game sweep

Down to their final six outs to avoid a four-game sweep, the Orioles bat came to life today. They tied the game. But that just led to another frustrating loss when right-hander Mychal Givens walked in the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth.

The New York Yankees won 6-5 to complete a four-game sweep and improve to 7-0 this year at Camden Yards and to 10-2 versus the Orioles with nine straight wins. They've won 12 in a row in Baltimore dating to last year.

Givens came on in the ninth after the O's scored four in the eighth for a 5-5 tie. He fanned the first two batters, and thought he struck out the side on a 2-2 pitch to pinch-hitter Gleyber Torres, but didn't get call and walked him. A single and walk followed to load the bases for Aaron Hicks. Givens fell behind 3-0, got two strikes to get to 3-2 in the count, but missed badly for the walk that put New York ahead.

The Orioles were behind 5-1 heading to the last of the eighth. They got some life when reliever Jonathan Holder faced the top of the order and walked Jonathan Villar and Stevie Wilkerson. Trey Mancini's RBI single to center pulled Baltimore within 5-2. The Yankees turned to right-hander Tommy Kahnle, who got Dwight Smith Jr. to fly out.

But Renato Núñez, who has been swinging better in recent days, delivered a huge swing. He drove a 2-2 changeup over the outside corner out to left-center to bring Camden Yards to life as he produced a 5-5 tie. Nunez hit No. 10 and it was his third homer in this series.

Earlier, O's right-hander Dylan Bundy was pretty solid again and Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka was as well.

Bundy blanked New York through 4 2/3 innings and led 1-0 when he left a curveball middle-middle in the fifth to Clint Frazier. He hit No. 9 out to left-center to tie it. In the sixth, a two-run single by Gio Urshela provided a 3-1 lead.

Bundy was close to getting out of the sixth in the 1-1 tie, but couldn't do it. Luke Voit's two-out double to left advanced a runner to third and Bundy walked Kendrys Morales on four pitches to load the bases. The count went to 2-2 when Urshela singled to left on a slider to score two runs and break the tie. Urshela is 4-for-4 with eight RBIs this season with the bases loaded.

The Orioles had taken a 1-0 lead in the second when Núñez led off with a single. Later, with the bases loaded and one out, shortstop Richie Martin beat out a potential double play grounder for an RBI and 1-0 lead. New York added on to make it 4-1 on Austin Romine's RBI single in the seventh. Voit's solo homer in the eighth off Miguel Castro made it 5-1.

Bundy got a no-decision, allowing three runs and five hits over 5 2/3 innings with two walks and five strikeouts. His ERA is 2.28 over his last four starts and 3.12 over his past six.

Tanaka gave up just one run and five hits in six innings. He has yielded just two runs his last three starts over 19 innings.

The Yankees' two homers today give them 13 in the series. They've hit 27, scoring 63 runs, in seven games in Baltimore this year and 36 in the season series over 12 games.

The Orioles (15-35) see their longest losing streak of the season expand to six games as they embark on a weekend road trip to play three games at Colorado. They have lost nine of 10, 13 of 15 and 19 of their past 24 games.
