O's turn to longball to back Chen and beat Yankees 6-2

In need of a victory to end a four-game losing streak, the Orioles turned to a familiar formula today: Get solid starting pitching and hit a few homers. Wei-Yin Chen went seven innings and the Orioles backed him with a three-homer game as they beat New York 6-2 at Yankee Stadium.

The Orioles had scored just 10 runs during the losing streak but they broke out today in improving to 13-15 for the season and handing New York just its sixth loss in the last 22 games.

Jimmy Paredes got the offense going with a solo homer to right on the first pitch he saw from Chase Whitley in the third inning. It was his fifth homer of the year and second of the series. Paredes, who went 3-for-5 and is batting .347, has an eight-game hitting streak.

The lead grew to 4-0 an inning later when Chris Davis hit a solo homer and Alejandro De Aza added a two-run shot. For Davis, it was his fifth homer in 12 games and seventh on the year. De Aza snapped a 4-for-34 drought with his second homer of the season, his first since April 11.

De Aza's homer snapped a stretch of eight straight solo homers hit by the Orioles, and the club's three homers tied a season high. The six runs today was their most since an 8-2 win over Chicago on April 29.

Delmon Young drove in the O's fifth and sixth runs with a single in the fifth and a double in the sixth that scored Paredes, who had tripled. The Orioles' six extra-base hits tied a season high. They hit just three singles today.

Whitley gave up five runs in 5 2/3 innings. He is 0-2 with an ERA of 11.12 in four career games against Baltimore, allowing five homers in 11 1/3 innings.

Chen provided the rotation with its fifth outing of seven innings or more over the last nine games. He gave up five hits and one run, with one walk and seven strikeouts. He threw 106 pitches, and is 1-1 with an ERA of 2.52.

Chen, who has allowed three runs in 13 innings to the Yankees this year, recorded his fourth quality start and fourth outing allowing two earned runs or less in six starts.

In the finale of the four-game series on Sunday at 1:05 p.m., Bud Norris (1-3, 9.75 ERA) faces right-hander Michael Pineda (4-0, 2.97 ERA).
