Orioles recall Sulser, option Vespi, claim McCarty and DFA Diplán

The Orioles discussed potential bullpen moves after last night’s wild 10-9, 10-inning victory over the Rangers and decided upon Beau Sulser, who’s been recalled from Triple-A Norfolk. He was on the taxi squad during the last road trip.

Left-hander Nick Vespi was optioned to Norfolk after last night’s game. Vespi was charged with six runs in one-third of an inning on June 29 in Seattle, tossed 1 1/3 scoreless with three strikeouts Monday against the Rangers, and served up a game-tying three-run homer last night to Norfolk native Nathaniel Lowe in the eighth.

Sulser has made one appearance with the Orioles and allowed two runs and seven hits in three innings. He has a 3.20 ERA in seven games with the Tides.

Marcos Diplán appeared to be a candidate to rejoin the Orioles, but they designated him for assignment and claimed left-hander Kirk McCarty off waivers from the Guardians. McCarty has been optioned to Norfolk.

The 40-man roster remains at full capacity.

McCarty, 26, was a seventh-round pick in the 2017 draft out of the University of Southern Mississippi. He made his first three major league appearances this season, including two starts, and allowed 12 earned runs (13 total) and 18 hits in 12 innings. He walked six batters and surrendered six home runs.

The Guardians recalled McCarty on Saturday as the 27th man to start the opening game of their doubleheader against the Yankees, and he allowed four runs and six hits in five innings.

Meanwhile, the Orioles probably will be slow again to post their lineup while checking on Austin Hays’ right wrist and Ryan Mountcastle’s sinuses.

Mountcastle pinch-hit last night and could return to first base or the designated hitter role.

Spenser Watkins has allowed one earned run in his last two starts over 11 innings since rejoining the Orioles. He’s walked two batters and struck out nine.

Watkins has never faced the Rangers.

The Orioles are trying for their first three-game sweep of the season.

The Rangers are starting right-hander Glenn Otto, the Yankees’ fifth-round draft pick in 2017 out of Rice University. He was part of the Joey Gallo trade last summer.

Otto has a 5.63 ERA and 1.532 WHIP in 10 starts, with 29 walks in 46 1/3 innings. He’s allowed 10 runs in his last two starts covering six innings.

Otto started against the Orioles on Sept. 23, 2021 at Camden Yards and allowed two runs with seven strikeouts in five innings. Mountcastle hit his 31st home run.

The Rangers are 4-16 in one-run games. Four of their last five losses have been decided by one run.

Texas has homered in 11 consecutive games, the longest active streak in the majors.

Down on the farm, Norfolk left-hander DL Hall struck out a career-high 14 batters over six innings in Jacksonville. He allowed one run and three hits with two walks, and he threw 98 pitches (68 strikes).

In his last two starts, Hall has worked 10 innings and allowed one run and four hits with three walks and 22 strikeouts.

Mike Baumann struck out five batters in three scoreless innings. He threw 30 of his 44 pitches for strikes.

Rylan Bannon hit his 10th home run, a two-run shot, and also had an RBI single. Terrin Vavra had a two-run single, and Kyle Stowers contributed an RBI double.
