Orioles acquire Bourn from Diamondbacks (O's lose 5-3)

The Orioles have completed their trade with the Diamondbacks tonight, acquiring veteran outfielder Michael Bourn in exchange for minor league outfielder Jason Heinrich.

Joey Rickard was transferred to the 60-day disabled list to make room for Bourn on the 40-man roster.

Bourn, 33, is batting .261/.307/.362 with 12 doubles, six triples, three home runs and 30 RBIs in 89 games with the Diamondbacks. He's a left-handed hitter to complement Drew Stubbs, a right-handed hitting outfielder claimed today off optional waivers.

Stubbs and Bourn are primarily center fielders also capable of playing both corners. They provide insurance behind Adam Jones, who's day-to-day with a strained left hamstring.

Rickard will undergo an exam on his right thumb on Friday. The move to the 60-day disabled list pushes his potential return into late September.

Bourn is a career .266/.329/.356 hitter in 11 major league seasons with the Phillies, Astros, Braves (twice), Indians and Diamondbacks. He's a two-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner.

Bourn and Stubbs will join the Orioles for Friday night's game against the Yankees at Camden Yards. They're part of an expanded roster and are eligible for the postseason.

Heinrich, 20, was a fifth-round pick in 2015. He's batting .231/.301/.347 in 44 games at short-season Single-A Aberdeen.

Heinrich hit .270/.360/.382 last season in 45 games in the Gulf Coast League.

Showalter indicated that any acquisitions by the Orioles wouldn't cost them anyone on the current 25-man roster. So far, he's been right.

Executive vice president Dan Duquette has been trying to improve the pitching depth, but so far he's settled for upgrading the outfield.

Meanwhile, the Orioles trail the Blue Jays 5-1 in the ninth inning and are in danger of falling into a tie with the Tigers for the second wild card in the American League.

Update: Jonathan Schoop hit a two-run homer off Roberto Osuna with two outs in the ninth, but the Orioles lost to the Jays 5-3.

The Orioles trail the Jays by four games in the American League East and are tied with the Tigers for the second wild card.
