Orioles acquire Brandon Wood from Royals (updated)

The Orioles made a minor league trade this morning, acquiring third baseman Brandon Wood from the Kansas City Royals organization for cash considerations. Wood, 28, will report to Triple-A Norfolk. This move isn't an indication that the Orioles are promoting an infielder to their major league club. At least not now. It's more organizational depth. Wood was the 23rd overall pick by the Anaheim Angels in the 2003 First-Year Player Draft, but he never lived up to his lofty prospect status. He's a career .186/.225/.289 hitter in parts of five seasons in the majors, with 18 homers, 64 RBIs and 218 strikeouts in 700 at-bats. Most recently, he batted .220/.277/.347 in 99 games with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2011. Wood, who can play all four infield positions, was hitting .264/.304/.396 with two homers and seven RBIs in 16 games with Omaha. He's a career .281/.347/.519 hitter in 10 minor league seasons. Danny Valencia has been the primary third baseman at Norfolk this season. The Orioles will conclude their three-game series against the Royals tonight at Camden Yards.
