Orioles acquire Chris Snyder (updated)

The Orioles didn't wait long to find another backup catcher. According to a text message from executive vice president Dan Duquette, the Orioles have acquired catcher Chris Snyder from the Los Angeles Angels for reliever Rob Delaney in a minor league deal. Update: The Orioles and Angels both announced the trade. Snyder, 32, could join the Orioles in Seattle on Monday night, according to Duquette, and will have his contract selected this week. Luis Exposito, who met up with the club in Oakland today, could lose his spot on the 40-man roster to create room for Snyder. Snyder signed as a free agent with the Washington Nationals on Feb. 5 and was released a month later. The Angels signed him on March 18. At Triple-A Salt Lake City, Snyder was batting .342/.388/.684 with six doubles, seven homers and 21 RBIs in 21 games. "Snyder is an experienced catcher (8-plus years) who can handle a pitching staff, slug against left-handed pitchers and get on base," Duquette said in a text message. Snyder, a second-round pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2002 First-Year Player Draft, batted .176/.295/.308 with eight doubles, seven homers and 24 RBIs last season in 76 games with the Houston Astros. He's a career .225/.329/.385 hitter in parts of nine major league seasons. The Orioles have been trying to improve their catching depth, and it became more of an urgency after Taylor Teagarden went on the disabled list today with a dislocated left thumb. He's expected to miss three to four weeks. The Orioles transferred Delaney from Norfolk to Double-A Bowie over the weekend. He allowed six runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings with the Tides. Delaney signed a minor league deal with the Orioles on Jan. 23.
