The Orioles today announced that they have acquired right-hander Odrisamer Despaigne (pronounced oh-DREE-sah-mer deh-SPAWN-yay) from the San Diego Padres in exchange for minor league right-hander Jean Cosme. To make room on the 40-man roster, left-hander C.J. Riefenhauser has been designated for assignment.
Despaigne, 28, went 5-9 with a 5.80 ERA (81 earned runs in 125.2 innings pitched) over 34 games (18 starts) with the Padres last season. In 50 career major league games (34 starts), he is 9-16 with a 4.74 ERA (117 earned runs in 222.0 innings pitched) and 134 strikeouts. Despaigne was originally signed by San Diego as a non-drafted free agent on May 2, 2014 after playing eight professional seasons in Cuba.
Cosme, 19, went 3-5 with a 4.74 ERA (30 earned runs in 57.0 innings pitched) in 12 starts with Class-A Aberdeen in 2015.
Riefenhauser, 26, was acquired by the Orioles on December 2, 2015 in a trade with the Seattle Mariners. He went 1-0 with a 5.52 ERA (nine earned runs in 14.2 innings pitched) in 17 games with the Tampa Bay Rays last season.
