Orioles activate Chris Davis from injured list

The Orioles have reinstated first baseman Chris Davis from the 10-day injured list and designated utility player Dilson Herrera for assignment.

Davis traveled with the team to New York yesterday after working out again at the alternate camp site in Bowie. He played in a simulated game on Saturday to test his injured knee.

The Orioles placed Davis on the 10-day injured list on Aug. 21 with left knee patellar tendinitis. He was slashing .122/.173/.184 with three doubles, three walks and 16 strikeouts in 52 plate appearances.

Renato Núñez has been playing first base in Davis' absence, but he's dealing with a sore hamstring that kept him out of Sunday's lineup.

Herrera appeared in only three games and was 0-for-5 with four strikeouts. He could be claimed on waivers or pass through and be outrighted to the secondary camp.

The 40-man roster currently has 39 players and the 60-man pool has 59.

The Orioles haven't posted their lineup for tonight's series opener against the Mets at Citi Field. Davis could be the first baseman against right-hander Michael Wacha.

John Means' last start also came against the Mets and he allowed four runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. He seemed to regain the feel for his changeup but said his fastball command was "horrible."

"That was the worst fastball command I think I've ever had. But other than that, my body feels good and I'm confident I can fix the fastball command. It's never been an issue for me and I don't see it being an issue for long," he said.

Wacha's most recent start, in the same game, lasted only three innings. The Orioles collected two runs and four hits.

Former Orioles reliever Miguel Castro has allowed go-ahead hits in two of his four Mets appearances, including Jean Segura's home run yesterday in the 10th inning.

Carson Fulmer is available to pitch tonight for the Orioles after completing the intake process. He threw a 35-pitch bullpen session yesterday said it went "really well."

Fulmer said he hasn't been told of his exact role.

"I think a lot of that is up in the air right now," he said in a Zoom conference call. "Obviously, I was drafted as a starter and deep down I do want to start again, but right now I've been through a couple teams the last month or so and I think they're just going to try to give me as many innings as possible just to kind of find that consistency.

"Anything they have for me, I'm definitely going to take it and try to be out there as much as possible."
