Orioles and Mariners lineups in Seattle (and notes)

The Orioles will attempt to rebound from last night’s 9-2 loss, their third in the last four games, by sending left-hander Cole Irvin to the mound for his first start since July 7 in Minnesota.

Irvin has made six relief appearances in a row. He’s inserted into a rotation now designed to provide more rest for the younger starters.

Irvin is 0-6 with an 8.42 ERA and 2.065 WHIP in six career games against the Mariners. He’s allowed 24 earned runs and 25 total with 41 hits in 25 2/3 innings.

Cedric Mullins is batting second tonight behind catcher Adley Rutschman. Gunnar Henderson is on the bench.

Ryan Mountcastle is the cleanup hitter, bumping first baseman Ryan O’Hearn to fifth. Mountcastle’s hitting streak ended last night at 12 games, but he’s reached base in 18 straight to set a career high.

Adam Frazier is the second baseman, Jordan Westburg is playing third and Jorge Mateo is the shortstop.

Anthony Santander, who hit his team-leading 21^st homer last night, is in right field and batting third.

Reliever Jacob Webb is the pitcher in Orioles history to strike out the first five batters he faced with the team.

The Orioles have thrown out 26.7 percent of runners attempting to steal, the fourth highest in the league. Seattle ranks last in the majors at 13.3 percent.

The Orioles’ lead over the second-place Rays is down to two games again.

Mariners All-Star right-hander George Kirby is 10-8 with a 3.32 ERA and 1.047 WHIP in 22 starts. He’s walked 14 batters in 135 2/3 innings.

Kirby pitched at Camden Yards on June 25 and allowed two earned runs and three total in 6 1/3 innings. Santander hit a two-run homer in the third.

In Kirby’s three career starts against the Orioles, he’s surrendered nine earned runs (10 total) and 19 hits over 16 1/3 innings. Santander is 4-for-9 with two homers.

Opponents are slugging .526 with four home runs against Kirby’s fastball since the All-Star break, after slugging .335 with six homers in the first half, per STATS.

Seattle has won eight games in row and 13 of 15. The Mariners are 25-10 since July 1, the best record in baseball.

Ty France is 6-for-13 with a double and home run against Irvin. Tom Murphy is 5-for-8 with a double.

Draft picks Kiefer Lord (86^th overall) and Blake Money (361^st), and free-agent signings Ty Weatherly (Ball State) and Jack Maruskin (Frostburg State) made their professional debuts today in the Florida Complex League.

Money started and allowed one run and three hits with three strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings. Lord tossed two scoreless and hitless innings with a walk and strikeout. Maruskin was charged with eight runs and four hits with four walks in one-third of an inning, and he also hit a batter and threw two wild pitches. Weatherly tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings with one hit, one walk and two strikeouts.

Lord, Money and Weatherly will move up to Single-A Delmarva next week.

Pitcher Zach Peek, recovered from Tommy John surgery, is moving his rehab assignment from the FCL to Delmarva next week.

Triple-A Norfolk pitcher Noah Denoyer was activated from the injured list.
