Orioles and Phillies showing aces in today's series finale

A marquee pitching matchup closes out the weekend series between the Orioles and Phillies at Camden Yards.

Corbin Burnes, the National League’s Cy Young Award winner in 2021 and a top eight finisher in three other seasons, is 7-2 with a 2.08 ERA and 1.004 WHIP in 14 starts. He’s surrendered eight home runs in 86 2/3 innings.

Burnes has registered nine quality starts in a row, three short of Jim Palmer’s club record set in 1975. He’s made four career appearances against the Phillies, including two starts, and allowed only one earned run (four total) and seven hits with 24 strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings.

Kyle Schwarber is 2-for-13 with a home run, four walks and seven strikeouts against him. Bryce Harper is 0-for-8 with five strikeouts. Nick Castellanos is 3-for-9 with a home run.

Phillies right-hander Zack Wheeler, who finished second in Cy Young voting in the National League in 2021 and sixth last year, is 8-3 with a 2.16 ERA and 0.935 WHIP in 14 starts. He’s surrendered only six home runs in 87 2/3 frames and is allowing only 5.6 hits per nine innings.

Wheeler has made two starts this month and allowed two runs in 14 innings. He’s surrendered two runs or fewer in his last five starts and nine of 10.

James McCann is 4-for-19 against Wheeler, who’s made four career starts against the Orioles and allowed five runs in 23 2/3 innings. Cedric Mullins is 2-for-5 with a double and triple.

“It's a great day for pitching, right?,” said pitching coach Drew French. "Anytime Burnes takes the mound it's awesome. I've seen Zack pitch for a lot of years. So yeah, this one will be fun."

McCann caught Burnes’ last five starts but he’s on the bench today. Ryan O’Hearn is the designated hitter. Mullins is in center field and Colton Cowser is in left.

Mullins is 5-for-13 after a 3-for-39 stretch.

Anthony Santander had his 14^th career multi-homer game yesterday. His eight home runs this month are the most in the majors.

Gunnar Henderson has reached base in 23 games in a row since May 22 in St. Louis.

The Yankees lost last night to leave the Orioles 2 ½ games out of first place.

The Oriole have registered 20 comeback wins. They’ve homered in 15 consecutive games, the longest streak in the majors this season and the team’s longest since 18 in a row in September 2019.

Grayson Rodriguez, who earned the victory yesterday by holding the Phillies to two runs in seven innings, Is the first Orioles pitcher to win eight of his first 12 starts to begin a season since Chris Tillman in 2012.

Triple-A Norfolk outfielder Heston Kjerstad homered last night, his first since June 2. Julio Teheran allowed two runs and four hits in six innings.

Jud Fabian hit his 12 home run and Dylan Beavers hit his ninth for Double-A Bowie.
