Orioles and Rangers lineups (and notes)

ARLINGTON, Texas – Jordan Lyles is still listed as the Orioles' starter tonight. Anthony Santander is in left field, Cedric Mullins is in center and Austin Hays is in right. Rougned Odor is the second baseman.

A little over an hour before the trade deadline arrives and the Orioles haven’t made another move.

Terrin Vavra is the designated hitter. Adley Rutschman is catching.

The Orioles are 52-51 to match last year’s win total, and they’re 2 ½ games out of the last wild card spot.

Santander extended his hitting streak to 12 games last night.

Twenty-six of Rutschman’s 49 hits are for extra bases, including 20 doubles. He’s batting .295/.393/.540 since his 8-for-56 start.

Lyles is facing his former team after tossing 5 2/3 scoreless innings against the Rays in his last start. He’s 1-6 lifetime against the Rangers with a 6.89 ERA and 1.852 WHIP in 11 games.

Right-hander Spencer Howard, a former Phillies second-round draft pick, has appeared in eight games (six starts) and registered a 5.93 ERA and 1.582 WHIP in 30 1/3 innings. He’s surrendered 10 home runs.

Howard tossed five scoreless innings against the Angels in his last game. He started against the Orioles on July 5 in Baltimore and allowed four runs and six hits in four innings.

Third baseman Coby Mayo’s injury rehab assignment has moved to high Single-A Aberdeen, where he’s batting third tonight.

The Orioles signed 18 of their 22 draft selections. They spent $17,735,600, the second-highest total in history behind the 2015 Astros’ $19,103,000.

MLB.com’s Jim Callis notes that shortstop Carter Young’s $1.325 million was a record for a 17^th-round pick.

Young transferred from Vanderbilt University to LSU and was expected to stay in school. The University’s Twitter account certainly implied it. But Young chose the Orioles, reuniting him with Orioles director of player development Matt Blood, who coached the shortstop on his 2017 18U National Team for USA Baseball.

“I think that’s a very exciting development for our draft class, adding to what is tremendous shortstop depth up and down our organization right now, and so that was good,” said executive vice president/general manager Mike Elias.

Elias confirmed on Tuesday that the club didn’t sign third-rounder Nolan McLean, a right-hander from Oklahoma State. The Orioles could have offered him $874,050 without forfeiting a draft pick.

At least they get a compensation pick next year after the third round.

Callis tweeted that the Orioles and McLean “disagreed” over results of his post-draft physical.

As reported earlier, the Orioles also were unable to sign right-hander James Hicks (15^th round), right-hander Andrew Walters (18^th) and outfielder Alden Mathes (19^th).

The Orioles announced that they signed four undrafted free agents: infielder Maxwell Costes from the University of Maryland and right-handers Hayden Nierman from UNLV, Trey Nordmann from Lipscomb University and Cooper Chandler from Rice University.

Chandler, 23, is the only one I hadn’t reported. He transferred from Pepperdine University and posted a 5.09 ERA and 1.461 WHIP in 14 games (12 starts) with 71 strikeouts in 63 2/3 innings.
