The Orioles resume their homestand tonight with Gunnar Henderson starting at shortstop against the Red Sox, Austin Hays batting eighth and playing left field, and Kyle Stowers batting ninth and starting in right.
Ramón Urías is the third baseman and batting sixth behind Henderson.
Jorge Mateo is on the bench.
Catcher Adley Rutschman is 10-for-24 during a six-game hitting streak, with three doubles, two home runs, six RBIs, three walks and five runs scored. His 29 doubles this year lead major league rookies and are tied for second-most among Orioles catchers in club history with Matt Wieters in 2013 and Ramón Hernández in 2006.
His 29 doubles also are tied with Hall of Famers Eddie Murray (1977) and Cal Ripken Jr. (1982) for most by an Orioles rookie in franchise history.
The Orioles are starting right-hander Austin Voth, who has a 2.71 ERA and 1.175 WHIP in 17 games (13 starts) with the Orioles. His most recent start against the Athletics lasted only 3 1/3 innings, when he allowed one run and six hits. But the Orioles won again.
They’ve done it in his first seven home starts, which is a club record.
Voth has made two career appearances against the Red Sox, including one start, and allowed five runs and six hits in three innings.
The start came in August 2020 while pitching for the Nationals. He allowed the five runs and six hits in two innings at Fenway Park.
Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers hit home runs.
Bogaerts left Tuesday’s game with back spasms.
The Orioles are 7-5 against the Red Sox this season, including 4-2 at home. They enter tonight 4 ½ games behind the Blue Jays for the last wild card.
Red Sox 23-year-old rookie Brayan Bello has registered a 5.91 ERA and 1.813 WHIP in eight games, including six starts, and he’s averaging 11.8 hits and 4.5 walks per nine innings. But he hasn’t surrendered a home run in 32 innings, and he shut out the Rangers on three hits over six frames in his last start.
Baseball America ranks Bello 21st on its top 100 prospects list, and writes: “Bello has blossomed from a skinny teenager to a hard-throwing righthander with an electric arsenal and improving command.”
MLBPipeline.com ranks him 37th.
Bello went 10-4 with a 2.34 ERA and 1.042 WHIP in 18 games between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester, and he struck out 129 batters in 96 innings.
