Austin Hays remains out of the Orioles lineup today as they conclude their road trip in Detroit.
Hays hasn’t played since Cardinals reliever Genesis Cabrera stepped on the back of his left hand in the seventh inning of Thursday’s game. He told the media this morning that he threw yesterday and is hoping to increase his baseball activity on Monday.
Ramón Urías moves up from fourth to second in the order today, and Jorge Mateo is batting fifth for the third time in his career and the first in 2022.
Tyler Nevin is the third baseman, Ryan McKenna the left fielder and Rylan Bannon the designated hitter.
Since May 3, the Orioles have two of the top four batting averages in the American League with Trey Mancini, first at .405, and Cedric Mullins, fourth at .354.
The Orioles bullpen has a 1.57 ERA since May 4 that’s the lowest in the majors.
Tyler Wells has a 3.75 ERA and 1.125 WHIP in six starts. He worked a career-high six innings in his last start versus the Royals, allowing only one run and issuing no walks for the fourth consecutive outing.
The Orioles are trying to avoid being swept by the Tigers for the first time in a three-game series in since 2018. They’re also trying to avoid their third sweep this season.
The Tigers are starting left-hander Tarik Skubal, who’s registered a 2.94 ERA and 1.129 WHIP in six starts. He’s walked six batters, struck out 34 and surrendered only two home runs in 33 2/3 innings.
In two starts this month, Skubal has allowed two runs in 13 innings and struck out 14 batters. Both home runs came in his May 5 start in Houston.
Skubal has made two career starts against the Orioles and allowed four runs and 12 hits in 11 2/3 innings. He tossed six scoreless innings at Camden Yards on Aug. 11, 2021, but Pedro Severino homered twice off him, and Ryan Mountcastle once, two weeks earlier at Comerica Park.
