A quick quiz to start your morning:
Name the Padres manager. Answer to follow.
The Orioles and Padres are set to begin a two-game series tonight at Camden Yards. They haven't met since 2013, when the Orioles won twice in San Diego and the Padres won twice in Baltimore.
The Padres' only other visit to Camden Yards came in 2002, when the Orioles won two of three games. Tony Batista hit a walk-off home run in the 10th inning.
Nate Colbert wasn't on the Padres roster, but we're still going back a ways.
(Side note: I once told my grandmother when I was a kid that I was going to name my future son "Nate." Never had a son. Probably wouldn't have done it anyway. But Colbert will always have a special place in my heart.)
So what do we know about the 2016 Padres? They're in last place in the National League West with a 29-42 record. They're 11-20 on the road, while the Orioles are 26-12 at home.
The Padres' 4.52 ERA ranked 24th in the majors yesterday. Their .241 average was 23rd and their .683 OPS was 28th.
They're sending a Rule 5 pick to the mound tonight, 23-year-old right-hander Luis Perdomo, who actually was selected by the Rockies from the Cardinals organization. The Padres acquired him the same day for cash considerations.
Perdomo is making his fourth start among 19 appearances. He's 2-2 with an 8.79 ERA and 2.14 WHIP, with 42 runs (41 earned) and 69 hits in 42 innings.
Perdomo's first two starts, on May 14 and June 5, led to eight runs and 12 hits allowed over 6 1/3 innings. However, he held the Marlins to three runs in six innings on Wednesday.
Right-handers are hitting .391 against Perdomo and left-handers are hitting .347. He's never faced any of the Orioles at the major league level.
Tyler Wilson has faced one Padre in his brief major league career: Alexei Ramirez is 0-for-3.
Wilson is coming off his finest start, shutting out the Red Sox on three hits over a career-high eight innings. He's pitching to contact, averaging 2.1 walks and 4.8 strikeouts per nine innings.
A home win would be nice. Wilson is 0-4 with a 5.01 ERA in seven games at Camden Yards and 3-1 with a 3.38 ERA in six road games. He's 0-5 with a 4.12 ERA in 11 career games (seven starts) in Baltimore.
Maybe we'll find out today whether the Orioles are purchasing Sharlon Schoop's contract. I'm not sure why they might need another infielder, but it should become more clear this afternoon.
Quiz answer: The Padres hired Andy Green on Oct. 29, 2015 after he spent one season as the Diamondbacks third base coach.
