For the fourth time this season, the Orioles faced a pitcher that won a Cy Young Award in 2012. They are now 4-0 in those games after producing a 6-5 win over R.A. Dickey and the Toronto Blue Jays.
Dickey gave up nine hits and six runs over 6 2/3. He falls to 4-6 on the year with an ERA of 4.85, and Toronto is 4-7 in his 11 starts.
In four starts against the Orioles this season, Dickey and Tampa Bay's David Price have pitched to a combined 6.20 ERA, allowing 30 hits and 17 earned runs over 24 2/3 innings.
Jim Johnson, who had suffered blown saves in his last three save chances, this time protected the one-run lead with a 1-2-3 last of the ninth. It's his 15th save on the year and first since May 10.
For the second game in a row, the Orioles struck for three runs in the first inning. Chris Davis plated the game's first run on an RBI double, and later J.J. Hardy added a two-run single.
After Toronto pulled within 3-2, Danny Valencia hit his second Orioles homer in his fourth game with the club. His two-run shot off the second deck in left made it a 5-2 lead. In the seventh, Adam Jones hit one even farther, and his bomb to left made the lead 6-3, Orioles.
For Jones, it was his third homer in three games in this series, fifth in the last 12 games and No. 9 on the season.
Facing a Toronto team that had scored 18 runs the last two days against the Orioles and was ranked second in the AL in runs scored since May 5, Freddy Garcia did a respectable job. Over five innings and 102 pitches, he gave up nine hits and three runs (two earned) with no walks and one strikeouts.
Garcia picked up his first Orioles win and is now 1-2 with an ERA of 4.61.
Steve Johnson came on for Garcia and went 2 2/3, and Darren O'Day gave up an inherited run before getting Jose Bautista to ground out with two on and Toronto down one to end the eighth.
The Orioles improved to 13-11 against the AL East and 27-22 overall on the season.
In the series finale at Rogers Centre on Sunday at 1:07 p.m. Miguel Gonzalez (2-2, 4.25 ERA) faces the Jays' Chad Jenkins (1-0, 3.60 ERA).
