Orioles bringing back Teheran on minor league deal

Running low on starting pitching, the Orioles are bringing back a veteran who didn’t make the team out of spring training.

The club is on the verge of signing Julio Teheran to another minor league deal, according to a source. The sides are "close."

Teheran, 33, agreed to a minor league deal on Feb. 28 that would have paid $2 million if he pitched in the majors. He allowed five runs and nine hits with seven walks and 10 strikeouts in 13 1/3 innings and was granted his release.

The Mets signed Teheran on April 5 and he became a free agent again six days later after making one start and allowing four runs and six hits in 2 2/3 innings in Atlanta.

The Cubs signed Teheran on April 18 and released him Saturday after another opt-out. He posted an 8.82 ERA and 1.806 WHIP in eight starts with Triple-A Iowa.

John Means and Tyler Wells are lost for the season. Means underwent Tommy John surgery yesterday in Texas, which brings a 12-to-18 month recovery, and he’s a pending free agent. Wells also needs his right ulnar collateral ligament repaired, and the Orioles should be passing along an update this week.

Dean Kremer is expected to go on a brief rehab assignment after recovering from a right triceps strain. He threw a light bullpen session yesterday in Toronto.

Teheran could give the Orioles a starting option in the minors or at least provide depth if they recall one of their prospects. Cade Povich and Chayce McDermott are on the radar.

The New York Post’s Jon Heyman first reported the deal.

Meanwhile, the Orioles continue their series in Toronto tonight after last night’s 7-2 win.

Connor Norby will be in the lineup again after going 0-for-3 in his major league debut.

Anthony Santander homered and is 9-for-23 with two home runs during a six-game hitting streak. He’s batting .310 (18-for-58) with two doubles, six homers, 14 RBIs, a .655 slugging percentage and a 1.040 OPS.

Corbin Burnes is back on the bump for his 13th start. He’s 5-2 with a 2.35 ERA and 1.046 WHIP in 72 2/3 innings and has surrendered only six home runs – none in his last five outings.

Burnes faced the Blue Jays on May 13 and allowed one run in six innings. He’s made two career starts against them and allowed four runs in 13 2/3 innings. He’s never pitched at Rogers Centre.

Bo Bichette is 4-for-7 with a home run against Burnes.

The Orioles improved to 38-20 last night and 12-4 against teams in the American League East. They’ve won eight of their last 10 and trail the first-place Yankees, winners of five in a row, by 2 ½ games.

The Blue Jays are alone in last place at 28-31. They’re 7-9 against division opponents.

Right-hander Trevor Richards is making his first start this season after 25 relief appearances. He’s allowed 10 runs and 12 hits in 28 1/3 innings but also has walked 13 batters.

The Orioles know Richards. They’ve seen him in 23 games, including seven starts. He owns a 5.91 ERA and 1.477 WHIP against them in 42 2/3 innings.

Ryan Mountcastle is 6-for-11 with two doubles against him. Cedric Mullins is 5-for-9. Santander is 4-for-18 with a double and two home runs.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has 23 home runs and 100 hits against the Orioles, his highest totals versus any opponent.

Bichette has a 12-game hitting streak against the Orioles. His career .901 OPS versus Baltimore is the second-highest among shortstops in major league history in a minimum 50 games.
