Orioles cancel fan rally at Camden Yards after Francis Scott Key bridge collapse

The Orioles called off their fan rally at Camden Yards scheduled for later today, in response to the early-morning collapse of the Francis Scott Key bridge.

Fans were invited to watch the workout and participate in a question-and-answer session with Orioles executive vice president/general manager Mike Elias and manager Brandon Hyde. A free ticket was required to gain entrance, with the event beginning at 6 p.m.

The team issued a statement on social media.

“In light of today’s tragedy, tonight’s open workout and rally for fans is cancelled. Our thoughts are with Baltimore.”

Media will have clubhouse access for 50 minutes beginning at 5 p.m. and the press box will be open.

Invitations to the Orioles Authentics Store and a food sampling from Brick & Whistle also were rescinded in light of the tragedy.

A cargo ship reportedly lost power and rammed into the bridge shortly before 1:30 a.m., causing its collapse into the Patapsco River. Six construction workers remain missing, with at least two people rescued.

Video of the horrific event is circulating through the internet.

The Orioles sent out an earlier statement that read:

“We are devastated by the news of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse, and send our thoughts and prayers to those impacted by this tragedy. We thank the brave first responders and the men and women actively working on rescue efforts. Baltimore, we’re a tight-knit and resilient city. Together we will get through this.”

Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson posted the following:

“For the people and their families that was a part of the collapsing Bridge in Baltimore my heart, thoughts and prayers are with you all.”

Opening Day is Thursday afternoon, weather permitting, against the Angels at Camden Yards. The team returned to Baltimore yesterday after a morning workout at the Ed Smith Stadium complex.
