Orioles claim Hanhold, Trumbo scratched (O's down 5-2)

DETROIT - Just as the Orioles appear set with their 25-man roster over the final two weeks of the season, they make another move that today involves a new addition to the pitching staff.

The Orioles claimed right-hander Eric Hanhold off waivers from the Mets this afternoon and designated left-hander Ty Blach for assignment.

Hanhold, 25, isn't with the team, but could join it Tuesday at Camden Yards for the start of a three-game series against the Blue Jays.

The Mets designated Hanhold for assignment two days ago while selecting the contract of former Orioles reliever Donnie Hart.

Hanhold hasn't pitched in the majors this season. He made three relief appearances with the Mets in 2018 and allowed two runs and four hits in 2 1/3 innings.

Hanhold made 39 relief appearances this year at Triple-A Syracuse and registered a 4.62 ERA and 1.644 WHIP in 48 2/3 innings. He also was used in nine games at Double-A Binghamton and posted a 1.23 ERA and 0.955 WHIP with two runs, nine hits, five walks and 18 strikeouts in 14 2/3 innings.

Thirty-one starts are included in Hanhold's 143 games in the minors, where he's registered a 4.64 ERA and 1.468 WHIP in 314 innings.

The Mets acquired Hanhold from the Brewers in September 2017 as a player to be named for infielder Neil Walker.

The Brewers selected Hanhold in the sixth round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Florida, where one of his teammates was Orioles shortstop Richie Martin.

Getting Hanhold into a game over the next two weeks would raise to 59 the number of players used by the Orioles this season, three more than last year's club record. Thirty-eight players have pitched for them.

Blach was 1-3 with an 11.32 ERA and 2.18 ERA in five starts and opponents posted a .356 average against him. He recently was moved to the bullpen, with Gabriel Ynoa making Saturday's start.

The Orioles selected Blach off waivers from the Giants on Aug. 3.

There's also been a lineup change, with Mark Trumbo scratched due to a strained left trapezius.

Trumbo made his comeback this month from right knee surgery last September. He's gone 5-for-19 with three doubles and three RBIs.

We'll find out later if Trumbo can return before the final game or whether he's played his last game with the Orioles.

Update: Victor Reyes led off the bottom of the first inning with a triple and Jordy Mercer homered for a 2-0 lead.

Update II: Reyes' two-out, two-run double in the fifth increased the lead to 4-0.

Update III: Mancini hit his 33rd home run and the Orioles trail 4-1 in the sixth.

Update IV: The Tigers loaded the bases against Means in the sixth and Dawel Lugo's sacrifice fly gave Detroit a 5-1 lead, but Viillar led off the seventh with a triple and scored on Hays' single.
