"Orioles Classics" #TBT: Davis homers twice as O's edge Tigers in extra innings

Since we know you're going through baseball withdrawal during this football-heavy time of year, we're giving you a few dramatic O's moments to help get you through the next week.

Earlier this season, the Orioles and Tigers competed in a bizarre back-and-forth marathon at Comerica Park with numerous lead changes and rallies that lasted until the 13th inning. After 5 hours, 19 minutes, the game ultimately ended in a 13-11 victory for the Orioles.

We won't get into too many gritty details, but a couple of leads were lost by both teams. We'll skip to the important, heroic parts of this story - Chris Davis led off a three-run 12th inning with a solo shot that gave the Birds a 9-8 lead. Fans thought that was the end of it, but Detroit rallied yet again with three more runs in the bottom half. Finally, it was Davis' two-run homer off Francisco Rodríguez in the top of the 13th inning that secured the win. The O's snapped a four-game losing streak with new season highs for runs (13) and hits (20), and tied their season high with eight extra-base hits. Lefty Richard Bleier got the final three outs to protect the lead and earn his first major league win.

Along with his pair of homers, Davis finished the night 3-for-5 with a double and two walks. MASN's Roch Kubatko reported, per STATS LLC, that Davis became the second player in O's history to homer twice in extra innings in the same game, the last being Mike Young in 1987.

For more than half a century, no player came close to breaking "Iron Horse" Lou Gherig's consecutive games played streak (2,130). But on Sept. 6, 1995 at Camden Yards against the California Angels, beloved Oriole Cal Ripken Jr. broke the unbreakable record and played in his 2,131st consecutive game in one of the most remarkable nights in baseball history.

The streak ultimately ended at 2,632 games on Sept. 19, 1998 against the Yankees. It is widely renowned not just by O's fans, but also by baseball fans as one of the most memorable moments in major league history. Thanks for the memories, Cal!

Tuesday, Nov. 28, 12:30 p.m. - The end of Ripken's legendary career came on Oct. 6, 2001 against the American League East rival Red Sox, ending an illustrious 21 years in the game. Fans may not remember the 5-1 loss, but they absolutely remember the night their hero and role model took the field for the last time to cheers and applause. It's OK if you cry, we're right there with you.

Wednesday, Nov. 29, 9 a.m. - Since we're on a roll here, let's continue the week with more record-breaking Ripken moments. Years before his 2,131st game and his finale in 2001, Cal Ripken Jr. made history alongside his father, Cal Ripken Sr., and his brother, Billy Ripken. The Ripken brothers had never played together on a professional team, but on July 11, 1987, Billy made his major league debut alongside his big brother as his father got to write their names on the lineup card. It was the first time in major league history a team had a father managing two sons. The lineup card was of course sent to Cooperstown following the game.

Wednesday, Nov. 29, 7:30 p.m. - Back by popular demand, we're re-airing Manny Machado's three-homer outing that ended with a walk-off grand slam against the Angels on Aug. 18. The people have spoken, and they want to watch more Manny doing Manny things!
