Orioles don't have long to regroup after brutal loss in the Bronx

As far as painful losses go, that one ranks right up there. The Orioles blew a 9-1 lead. They blew a three-run lead in the ninth. They lost to a bitter rival. They lost at Yankee Stadium. They are no longer alone in first place atop the American League East.

We could discuss how it unraveled, who is to blame and what it all means, but the Orioles have another game to play this afternoon. A loss today will just make Friday's defeat even worse, while a win could begin the regrouping process.

No matter how excruciating it was for Orioles fans, Friday's game still only counts as one loss and no more or less than, say, a 9-3 loss at Cincinnati or a 2-0 loss to Tampa Bay when the club was blanked on two hits by five relievers. They all look the same in the standings, even if they don't feel at all the same. But the Orioles 14-11 loss Friday night in 10 innings was beyond brutal.

According to MASN's "O's Xtra" postgame, this was the first time the Orioles have ever blown an eight-run lead in losing to the Yankees. They've had some meltdowns over the years in New York. You can put this one up against most.

At 14-7, the Orioles and Yankees are tied for first in the AL East this morning.

Can they rebound today? Will they?

* This is the Orioles' first loss after scoring 11 runs or more since July 29, 2006, when the Chicago White Sox beat them 13-11.

* According to the Elias Sports Bureau, this is the Yankees' first win after trailing by at least eight runs since April 21, 2012 in Boston. The Yankees have a share of first place for first time since Aug. 24, 2015.

* The Orioles have lost 12 of their last 13 series-opening games at Yankee Stadium dating back to the beginning of the 2013 season.

* Mark Trumbo was 0-for-20 his previous five games, without an RBI his last 13 games and with no homers his previous 19 games. Then he hit his fourth career grand slam in the sixth inning. The slam traveled 459 feet on an exit velocity of 115.7 mph.

* Manny Machado's solo home run in the fifth was the longest homer hit in the majors this season. It went 470 feet.

* The Orioles bullpen had given up four homers all year over 67 1/3 innings, and then allowed three homers last night. Over 3 1/3 innings, the bullpen gave up six hits and nine runs. The 'pen ERA was 1.21 the previous nine games.

* Previously, the most runs the Orioles had given up in a game was nine, and the most homers allowed was three. The Yankees hit five homers Friday, accounting for 12 of their 14 runs.

* The Orioles were 3-0 in extra-inning games and 12-5 versus the AL East heading into this series. New York is now 9-1 at home and 13-3 over its past 16 games.

* The Orioles went 4-for-9 with runners in scoring position after going 2-for-24 with RISP the previous four games.
