Orioles don't make a trade at deadline, Thome to DL (updated)

NEW YORK - The 4 p.m. non-waiver deadline has passed and the Orioles didn't make a trade. Executive vice president Dan Duquette will be available to the media in a conference call later this afternoon. So much for the heated trade talks with the Phillies for pitcher Joe Blanton. Nothing came of it. Keep in mind that trades can still be made after today. However, the players must pass through waivers. Update: I talked to an Orioles official who said, "We're trying to improve on what we've got, not take it apart." In other words, the demands from other teams were too extreme. They weren't going to part with their top prospects. Blanton stays with the Phillies. Third baseman Chase Headley stays with the Padres. The Royals traded closer Jonathan Broxton, who drew serious interest from the Orioles, to the Reds. The news isn't good on designated hitter Jim Thome. He's going on the disabled list with a herniated disk in his neck. Thome will fly out to California tonight or tomorrow and receive an epidural shot. Thome hasn't played since Friday, making him eligible to return on Aug. 12. Robert Andino has been activated from the disabled list to take Thome's roster spot, but he isn't in tonight's lineup. He has six career home runs at Yankee Stadium, his most in any road ballpark. The Orioles have won three of the first four games in the Bronx this year. The last time they won four games was 2007 (4-5). The last time they won five or more games in a season in New York was 1997 (5-1). With Betemit's 12th homer last night, the Orioles became the 11th team in the majors, and sixth in the American League, to have at least four players with 12 or more homers. The group includes four AL East teams, with the Rays being left out.
