Orioles go 0-for-3 in Gold Glove voting

Austin Hays didn’t commit an error this season. He also didn’t receive a Gold Glove.

The Guardians’ Steven Kwan won his second award in left field, with the announcement made tonight on ESPN. Catcher Adley Rutschman and first baseman Ryan Mountcastle also were finalists, but they lost to Rangers teammates Jonah Heim and Nathaniel Lowe, respectively.

The Orioles drafted Heim in the fourth round in 2013 and traded him to the Rays three years later for Steve Pearce.

The Blue Jays’ Daulton Varsho also was a finalist in left, but Kwan is a back-to-back recipient. Hays was trying to become the first Orioles outfielder to win since Adam Jones and Nick Markakis in 2014.

Hays also failed to become the first left fielder since Rawlings began awarding Gold Gloves for each outfield position in 2011.

Winners are determined from voting by the managers and coaches in each league, who are prohibited from choosing their own players. A sabermetric component accounts for about 25 percent of the vote total.

Hays wasn’t charged with an error in 236 chances in left, and in 1,195 1/3 innings overall in the outfield, and FanGraphs calculated his ultimate zone rating at 7.0 and his UZR/150 at 7.7. He ranked third on the club with six defensive runs saved.

Rutschman appeared in 110 games behind the plate, starting 104, and was charged with six errors and no passed balls. He threw out 16 of 73 runners attempting to steal.

Baseball Reference assigned Rutschman a 0.2 dWAR. FanGraphs calculated his defensive runs saved declining from 18 last season to two.

Mountcastle was limited to 86 starts and 90 appearances at first base after making two trips to the injured list with vertigo and right shoulder inflammation. He committed only two errors in 716 chances, but Baseball Reference calculates his dWAR at a minus-0.4.

Ramón Urías won a Gold Glove at third base last year but wasn’t a finalist in 2023.

Manny Machado also won at third base in 2015. The last multiple winners for the Orioles were Jones, Markakis and shortstop J.J. Hardy in 2014.

Matt Wieters is the only Orioles catcher to win a Gold Glove, which he did in 2011-12.

The Orioles don’t have a Gold Glove first baseman since Rafael Palmeiro in 1998.

They committed 71 errors this season, tied with the Blue Jays for fifth-fewest in the majors. Their .988 fielding percentage was topped only by the Diamondbacks (.990), Rangers (.990) and Cardinals (.989).

The club’s 34 defensive runs saved, including 13 at shortstop, ranked eighth in the majors, per The Fielding Bible. The Orioles turned 140 double plays to rank ninth. However, they were shut out in The Fielding Bible awards this year.
