Orioles haven't found same success vs. Porcello (O's lose 7-5)

Delmon Young's fly ball to right-center field tonight to end the bottom of the second inning was cause for celebration after Red Sox starter Rick Porcello struck out the first five batters.

The streak had to end.

Porcello struck out Alejandro De Aza and Manny Machado looking and got Jimmy Paredes, Adam Jones and Chris Davis swinging. Jones thought a 3-1 pitch was down and away and he took a step toward first base before plate umpire Dana DeMuth called it a strike. Jones had a few words for DeMuth on his way back to the dugout after chasing a pitch out of the zone with the count full.

Red Sox center fielder Mookie Betts ran down Young's drive for the final out in the second inning, and Rey Navarro - in his major league debut - struck out looking to open the third.

The Orioles got their first baserunner when Caleb Joseph walked, but Everth Cabrera grounded into a double play.

In Porcello's last start, the Orioles reached him for eight runs and 12 hits in five innings Sunday at Fenway Park.

Miguel Gonzalez has turned in three scoreless innings, allowing three singles and hitting Betts. He's thrown 47 pitches, 31 for strikes.

Earlier today, manager Buck Showalter was asked whether he spoke to his team to assure that tempers wouldn't flare again in Toronto. It wasn't necessary. The players knew what to do.

"It's just who our guys are," Showalter said. "I don't know if you noticed in Game 2, Caleb's first at-bat there was a guy struggling to throw strikes, (Aaron) Sanchez, and the first pitch would have hit (Joseph) between the eyes if he hadn't moved his head. What reaction did you see from our dugout? None. Why? Why? Because it wasn't intentional. The guy's wild. That's just the way it is. But let me ask you a question. On the flip side, if that happened the other way around, what do you think would have happened? That's my point.

"I can't make some emotional overreaction and the next thing you know some kid is laying at home plate with a ball in his face or his head. How manly is that? Is that really how you show your manhood? I have my moments but I'm real confident in our leadership and peer group in there. That's why I was fourth in line talking to Manny when he had the bat thing (against Oakland). I had to wait my turn to talk to him. I had three guys telling him, so I feel real good about our peer group to bring young players into or someone from another system to keep us out of harm's way. But there comes a point when you can take just so much, too. Trust me."

Down on the farm, Dylan Bundy allowed two runs and four hits in three innings against Akron, with one walk and four strikeouts. I don't have any information on his velocity.

Update: Machado walked with one out in the fourth inning and Paredes followed with his second home run, a shot to right field that gave the Orioles a 2-0 lead.

De Aza is 0-for-2 tonight and 3-for-25 during his slump.

Update II: David Ortiz hit a three-run homer off Gonzalez with two outs in the fifth and Hanley Ramirez followed with a solo shot to left. The Red Sox lead 4-2.

The rally started with a two-out walk to Betts.

Update III: Navarro collected his first major league hit and scored his first run in the fifth to reduce the lead to 4-3.

Ramirez misplayed Navarro's fly ball in the gap - it was credited as a double - and Everth Cabrera singled with two outs.

Gonzalez allowed four runs and eight hits in six innings, witih one walk, one strikeout and two home runs. He threw 91 pitches, 60 for strikes.

Gonzalez ends a streak of eight consecutive games where Orioles starters failed to last more than 5 1/3 innings.

Update IV: The Orioles tied the game in the seventh on Everth Cabrera's sacrifice fly, but Machado struck out with the bases loaded and the count full to end the inning.

Navarro laid down an excellent sacrifice bunt after Davis led off with a walk and Young singled. Joseph was walked intentionally before Cabrera batted.

Tommy Hunter threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings.

Update V: Brock Holt hit a three-run homer off Darren O'Day with two outs in the eighth, his first of the season, to break a 4-4 tie.

Brian Matusz walked Pablo Sandoval with two outs and O'Day replaced him. Machado committed a fielding error on Allen Craig's bouncer, his third of the season, and Brock cleared the out-of-town scoreboard in right field.

Machado appears to be in some discomfort, grimacing after charging Ramirez's bouncer and throwing him out to open the eighth.

Update VI: Davis homered off Junichi Tazawa with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, his third of the season, to reduce the lead to 7-5.

Update VII: Game over. The Orioles stranded two runners in the ninth and ran their losing streak to five games with Boston's 7-5 victory before 37,359 at Camden Yards.

Joseph and Steve Pearce singled to put runners on the corners with one out against former Oriole Koji Uehara. Pearce was 2-for-24 and 4-for-40.

Machado popped up and Paredes struck out.
