Orioles hope for right ending to left coast trip

Will Steve Pearce make it back into the Orioles lineup today in the final game of their three-city West Coast trip?

Pearce hasn't started three of the last four games. He went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts Friday night and is 1-for-16 with eight strikeouts in his last four games and 5-for-30 with 10 strikeouts in his last nine games.

Pearce doesn't have a history with Mariners starter Roenis Elias. No one does with the Orioles.

Elias is making his 21st start in his rookie season. He's 8-8 with a 4.41 ERA, with 108 hits allowed in 118 1/3 innings. He's walked 42, struck out 104, served up 14 home runs, hit seven batters, thrown five wild pitches and committed four balks.

Elias has allowed five earned runs or more in three of his last four starts and four of seven. He's permitted only one earned run in the other three starts. He hasn't gone more than 5 1/3 innings in his last three outings.

Elias is 1-2 with a 7.90 ERA in three July starts, with 12 earned runs (13 total) and 19 hits in 13 2/3 innings.

Right-handers are batting .255 against Elias and left-handers are hitting .209.

Elias is 3-for-5 with a 4.84 ERA in 11 home starts and 5-3 with a 3.95 ERA in nine road starts.

Miguel Gonzalez remains the starter for the Orioles today despite manager Buck Showalter's hints that he could tweak the rotation. T.J. McFarland worked 2 2/3 innings yesterday, which eliminated him from consideration. Brad Brach faced one batter.

That leaves Gonzalez, who's never faced the Mariners.

Robinson Cano is 2-for-21 dating back to his days in the Bronx, and Kendrys Morales is 0-for-3.
