Orioles lineup for Game 1 vs. Blue Jays

The Orioles optioned reliever Rico Garcia after yesterday’s 5-0 loss to the Athletics and recalled Beau Sulser from Triple-A Norfolk. A new arm for the bullpen in today’s makeup doubleheader with the Blue Jays at Camden Yards.

Garcia pitched yesterday and retired all four batters he faced.

Mike Baumann is on the mound for Game 1, his first major league start and 12th appearance.  He faced the Blue Jays on Sept. 12, 2021 in Baltimore and allowed six runs in three innings. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. hit a two-run homer.

In Baumann’s last three starts with Norfolk, he held opponents to two earned runs and three total over 16 innings.

Gunnar Henderson is playing second base again in Game 1. Jesús Aguilar is the designated hitter.

Anthony Santander’s double yesterday in the first inning had an exit velocity of 112 mph, tied with Ryan Mountcastle for the hardest-hit ball by an Oriole this season.

Jordan Lyles is starting Game 2. He’s 3-1 with a 6.67 ERA and 1.871 WHIP in six career games (five starts) against the Jays.

Lyles is 2-0 against Toronto this season, with six runs and 13 hits allowed in 11 innings.

Matt Chapman is 7-for-19 with a double and four home runs against him. Whit Merrifield is 6-for-16 with a double. Raimel Tapia is 5-for-15 with two doubles.

George Springer is 1-for-14.

Kevin Gausman is making his first start at Camden Yards since the Orioles traded him to the Braves at the 2018 deadline. He faced the Orioles on June 16 and surrendered five earned runs (seven total) and seven hits in 2 1/3 innings.

Gausman is 10-9 with a 3.14 ERA and and 1.247 WHIP in 25 starts. He’s struck out 164 batters in 140 1/3 innings.

José Berríos starts Game 2 for the Jays. He’s 9-5 with a 5.32 ERA and 1.375 WHIP in 26 starts, and he’s surrendered 27 home runs in 140 1/3 innings to lead the American League.

Berríos made one start against the Orioles this season and allowed three runs and three hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings. Adley Rutschman hit his first major league home run, and Mountcastle also homered.

Mountcastle is a career .336/.395/.694 hitter in 34 games against Toronto, with six doubles, 14 home runs and 28 RBIs. And he’s heating up just as the Jays arrive, with three homers and six RBIs in his last four games.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is a career .339/.386/.665 hitter in 54 games against the Orioles, with 12 doubles, 20 home runs and 49 RBIs.
