Orioles lineup vs. Brewers in series finale (updated)

MILWAUKEE – The Orioles try to avoid their first sweep this afternoon with Austin Hays in center field and batting cleanup, and Gunnar Henderson replacing Jorge Mateo at shortstop.

Ryan Mountcastle has returned to the lineup after being on the bench for two of the last five games. He’s 4-for-26 in his last seven and batting sixth today.

Anthony Santander is in right field and batting third. He’s 0-for-20 on the road trip.

James McCann is catching and Adley Rutschman is the designated hitter.

Ryan O’Hearn is starting in left field. Aaron Hicks, who’s 7-for-19 with the Orioles, is on the bench.

Kyle Bradish has registered a 4.13 ERA and 1.354 WHIP in 10 starts. He’s allowed three runs or fewer in six of the last seven but lasted only four innings in San Francisco.

Bradish has never faced the Brewers.

The Orioles are 6 ½ games behind the Rays in the American League East. The Yankees are 1 ½ games behind Baltimore, and the Blue Jays are three.

The Orioles have lost four of their last six. They were shut out on two hits last night until scoring twice in the ninth inning.

Right-hander Colin Rea has made nine starts for Milwaukee and 10 appearances overall, recording a 4.94 ERA and 1.268 WHIP in 47 1/3 innings. He’s never faced the Orioles in parts of five major league seasons, beginning in 2015 with the Padres.

Rea underwent Tommy John surgery in 2016 and didn’t pitch again in the majors until July 2020.

The Brewers began the series in second place in the National League Central but now lead the Pirates by 1 ½ games. They’re going for their fourth sweep today.

Milwaukee is 15-6 when scoring in the first inning, and 28-6 when scoring first.

Rookie Joey Wiemer went 4-for-4 with a double, two home runs and five RBIs last night. His hitting streak has grown to eight games, and he’s batting .481 (13-for-27) during that stretch.

Update: Tyler Wells starts Friday night against the Royals, air quality permitting, and Kyle Gibson starts Sunday. The Saturday spot is TBA and Hyde expressed a preference for a "traditional starter" over an opener.

Left-hander Cole Irvin would seem to be a strong candidate to rejoin the team from Triple-A Norfolk.
