Orioles match eight games' worth of homers in just four innings

Don't worry, the Orioles didn't really hit four more homers while you slept, you just dreamed that. Looking back now on a day that the Yankees, A's, Rays and Angels all won, it was a pretty good idea for the Orioles to break out on offense and get their own win. That was quite a statement by the Orioles last night and, for now, they may have at least temporarily calmed a somewhat nervous fan base. Here are some other notes/stats on a wild night: * The Orioles had hit a total of six homers in their previous eight games before last night. Then, they hit six over a four-inning stretch from the fifth through eighth innings in the win over Toronto. The Birds hit seven on the night to tie the club's single-game record. * The Orioles had never hit seven homers in a home game until last night. When they hit seven twice before, they did it Aug. 26, 1985 at California against the Angels when Eddie Murray hit three home runs and four others hit one; they hit seven also on May 17, 1967 at Boston when they got one each from seven players. * The Orioles hit 32 homers in 18 games this year against Toronto, and two players combined to hit half of them as Chris Davis hit nine and Adam Jones seven homers this year in the season series. Davis hit .393 with four doubles, nine homers, 17 RBIs, a .902 slugging percentage and 1.365 OPS in 17 games vs. the Jays. Jones hit .426 with five doubles, seven homers, a .809 slugging percentage and 1.296 OPS over 18 games against Toronto. No other Oriole hit more than three homers vs. the Blue Jays this year. O's most homers by opponent in 2012: 32 - Toronto 30 - New York Yankees 18 - Boston * Manny Machado hit two homers last night. He also homered twice in his second major league game on Aug. 10 vs. Kansas City. But, going into last night, Machado had gone 17 games without a homer and had hit just one in the last 40 games and 154 at-bats. But he homered in the fifth and eighth innings Wednesday night. * Machado's homer in the fifth was the Orioles' 200th of the year. They went on to add four more, and their current total of 204 moves the 2012 O's past the 1999 club for fifth most homers in team history. The Orioles rank 2nd in the majors in homers: 233 - New York Yankees 204 - Orioles 202 - Chicago White Sox * Mark Reynolds had hit just one homer his last 16 games before connecting in the sixth inning. He now has hit 11 in the last 26 games and 13 in 41. Nate McLouth hit his ninth career leadoff homer and has four over his last 12 games. Davis has now hit 10 in the past 31 games. After three losses in four games, the Orioles needed some runs and a win. They got both. Nothing is clinched, and the top teams continue to play good baseball in the AL. Six games to go.
