Orioles must make room for Eveland

Dana Eveland will arrive in Baltimore later today and make tomorrow night's start against the Rays at Camden Yards. That much we know. In fact, we knew about it yesterday, but manager Buck Showalter confirmed it this afternoon and joked about how the reporters staring back at him already figured it out. Here's what we don't know: How the Orioles will make room for Eveland on the 25-man and 40-man rosters. That's a much more complicated mystery. The Orioles could open a spot on the 40-man by transferring second baseman Brian Roberts to the 60-day disabled list. Otherwise, they'd have to designate a player for assignment. As for the 25-man roster, the Orioles could option Tommy Hunter to Triple-A Norfolk after he starts Game 2 tonight. He wasn't supposed to be here anyway, but Jason Hammel's sore knee changed the right-hander's travel plans. The other alternative would be to option Stu Pomeranz, who tossed three scoreless innings Monday in his major league debut and actually gives Showalter a reliever who resembles a long man. Pomeranz and Darren O'Day have options. I can't imagine O'Day going to Norfolk. Eveland is 3-2 with a 2.21 ERA in six games with Norfolk. He's walked six and struck out 19 in 36 2/3 innings. He'll be the first to tell you that he pitches to contact. Eveland was 1-2 with a 3.46 ERA in six spring training games, including three starts. He allowed 17 hits, walked one and struck out eight in 13 innings. "He had a good year in a very hitter friendly park in Triple-A and has had some success at times in the big leagues and is pitching really well down there," Showalter said. "He's pitching as well as any of their starters down there. I think we're lucky to have him. We'll see if Tampa agrees with me."
