Orioles name Einar Diaz major league staff assistant coach

The Orioles today announced that Einar Diaz has been promoted to Major League Staff Assistant Coach. Beginning this season, Major League Baseball rules permit a seventh coach to be in the dugout or bullpen during games. Diaz will serve primarily as an assistant to Hitting Coach Jim Presley. Diaz, 40, is in his sixth year as a coach in the Orioles organization after coaching assignments with Gulf Coast (Rookie), Aberdeen (Short-season A), Delmarva (A) and Bowie (AA). He also served as manager of Bluefield (Rookie-Advanced) from 2009-10. Diaz played in 673 games over 11 major league seasons for the Indians, Dodgers, Rangers, Expos and Cardinals and batted .254 (523-2061) with 21 home runs and 202 RBI. He was a member of three Indians teams that reached the postseason (1998-99 and 2001) and one with St. Louis (2005). Diaz was named to Baseball Digest's 1999 Major League Rookie All-Star Team and was a South Atlantic League all-star in 1994 and an International League all-star in 1998.
