Orioles need to capitalize on opportunities (updated)

WASHINGTON - One day after stranding 12 runners in a 6-5 loss to the Blue Jays, the Orioles have left four on base in the first three innings against the Nationals. The Orioles were 4-for-18 with runners in scoring position yesterday at Rogers Centre. They're 0-for-1 today, with Adam Jones grounding out with runners on second and third and two outs in the second inning. Manny Machado singled with two outs, his 46th road hit to lead the majors. It's also his 73rd hit this season. He began the day trailing Detroit's Miguel Cabrera by three for the major league lead. J.J. Hardy reached on third baseman Ryan Zimmerman's throwing error, and both runners moved up on Gio Gonzalez's wild pitch. But Jones grounded to Zimmerman. Orioles starter Jason Hammel retired the Nats in order in the first inning, striking out two, but Adam LaRoche led off the second with a single and stole second - his eighth career steal. Yamaico Navarro couldn't hold the throw from catcher Matt Wieters. The sequence proved costly. Tyler Moore doubled down the left field line with one out to score LaRoche for a 1-0 lead. Gonzalez led off the third inning with his first double of the season. He's batting .267, tied for the second-highest average in the Nats' lineup today. Chris Davis led off the fourth with a walk. The Blue Jays walked him intentionally three times yesterday. Update: The Orioles did, indeed, capitalize on their scoring opportunities in the fourth inning. The Orioles plated three runs to take a 3-1 lead. Navarro tied the game with an RBI single and Nick Markakis followed Hammel's sacrifice bunt with a two-run single. Markakis extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Machado followed with his 23rd double, tops in the majors. He also has 23 multi-hit games. Davis tagged up and hustled to third base on Steve Pearce's fly ball to left, which allowed him to score easily on Navarro's single to left field. Hammel was greeted with applause in the Orioles' dugout after his sac bunt. The Orioles are now 2-for-5 with runners in scoring position in four innings and have stranded six runners.
