Orioles place Ryan Flaherty on disabled list

The Orioles confirmed their roster move this afternoon, placing infielder Ryan Flaherty on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right groin muscle and recalling infielder Rey Navarro from Triple-A Norfolk.

The DL assignment is retroactive to yesterday.

Flaherty, 28, was batting .300/.400/.600 with two home runs and four RBIs in nine games.

Navarro, signed as a minor league free agent in December, would be making his major league debut if he gets into a game. The 25-year-old infielder was 3-for-7 with a home run in two games with Norfolk this season. He started out on the disabled list with a groin injury.

In 885 games over nine minor league seasons, Navarro has batted .265/.313/.377 with 47 home runs, 363 RBIs and 74 stolen bases. The Orioles assigned him No. 43.

Flaherty joins shortstop J.J. Hardy, second baseman Jonathan Schoop, catcher Matt Wieters and reliever Wesley Wright on the disabled list.

Wright continues to rehab his injured left shoulder down in Sarasota, but he hasn't been cleared to begin throwing. The Orioles placed Wright on the disabled list on April 11 with a strained left trapezius muscle.

University of Maryland basketball standout Dez Wells will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.
